Have you had any success at pain relief from the steriod injections? My Dr wants to try an epidural nerve block and I am not too sure about it. I have heard it's not a "cure".. and for most the best pain relief they get is only a week. Have you refused the injections? How did your dr react to it? Did you get them and did they help and/or work? Thanks in advance.

I have chronic Tendinitis in my right hand and elbow which outs me in ALOT of pain. I have had the steroid shot in my elbow before, and it helped for a few months. But I should also mention that my elbow is not as bad as my right hand a wrist are, but my doctor told me that she could not give me a shot in my hand because there was too much going on in there(bones, joints, tendons). So the pain I had in my elbow, although chronic, was kinda mild compared to my hand.

Thanks for the reply. I have to get them in my lower back and neck. Well I don't "have" too. But I have to make a decesion. If it was my elbow I would do it but because its my back and neck I am afraid.

I had one a year ago and it was the worst experience I ever had.I had it in my lower back as well. After I got really sick and had the worst migraines I have experienced. Worst 48 hrs of my life. They said when u lose spinal fluid its a common reaction. But it helped for about a month. Never wanted to get another one. Good luck

i had a mylogram done on my back, which is where they inject a dye in your back and take xrays of it.

i had severe headaches and couldnt get out of bed to shower or use the bathroom it hurt so bad

Yea I am worried about that and other things too. With spinal headaches they actually have to stick a needle back in there and seal it with blood so it clots and the fluid doesn't leak out. The only spinal experience I have was from my c section. I dont want that to happen to me.

I have chosen to decline the injections because everyone I know that has had them said it only worked for a few days and its back to chronic pain. Its a temp fix and alot of them further weaken your bone ligaments and other stuff. Not something I am into. I will find another solution.

Thanks all!

I did a set of three steroid injections and they are just like getting the epidural when you have a kid except there is no happy numbing coming they suck and they don't really work on about 50% of people who get them.....i also had a SI joint injection which was 100x worse.......be careful though a lot of dr. wont keep prescribing narcotics if you don't do them. they are just one of the "steps" of treatment for lower back pain....i suffer from that also

I wouldn't try it unless it is intractable pain that doesn't respond to other medications. I have determined doctors dont know what they are doing when it comes to pain management and spine issues. If the pain is livable, stay away from their fancy treatments. I am not going to be their guinea pig that's for damn sure. If you are on the brink of life and death because the pain is so bad, then I would try their crazy treatments but the side effects are often so intense they are just adding to the problem.

Good luck

my dad gets some sort of steroidal shot in his knee every so often, he says it helps ALOT. hes been back to golf and football since getting them, a major improvement on his lifestyle

they are expensive but they seem worth it in my dads case

This is what I want to say without coming off as rude. The pain is managed by medication. I am not really down with getting needles in my spine and neck. It freaks me the fuck out. Not to mention those shots if used too much weaken the bone, ligament and other surrounding tissues. For me getting those shots would be something I would consider if it got worse in 6 months or so. Not something I want to do right now. Pain Mgt drs really don't know wtf they're doing. They want you to be as miserable as possible so they can do these weirdo treatments. Everybody I know that has gotten these shots in the spine has said they only gave relief for 3 days or none at all and the pain getting them was ridiculous.

I am going back to the Pain Mgt dr today!! Wish me luck.

They worked really well on my moms arm too. I just am having issues getting them in my spine and neck.

Yeah, I refused them. My doctor is trying out all kinds of crazy meds that don't work usually and luckily some work. I also don't want to bear possible side effects of something that might not bring much relief. I heard there is a device that can block the pain. It is invasive surgery where they put an electrical device that blocks the pain signals kinda like opiates but w/o the opiates. I considered that and might get it in the future as I heard really positive things about it, that it works and you can have drug free pain relief for a long time, as long as needed. That would be a risk I would be willing to take.

I'm happy these days that my pain is controlled. Before I went on opiates I pretty much cried everyday. It's easier to get meds as you get older I found out. My pain started when I was around 23 and now at almost 28 doctors are much more willing to prescribe me narcotics and benzos if I need them. Before they weren't willing at all.

these arent fancy treatments this is the natural progression in treatments when other things arent working.....

I have had 18 shots total 6 epidural injections and 12 facet injections....you have to try these to see if other treatments are viable such as nerve ablation or a spinal cord stimulator

I have opted for the spinal cord stimulator I think that is what zyggy was talking about. the problem is you have to get these shots first to see how you respond. then you have to have a temporary stimulator placed on the outside of your body for a week and if it works it is then surgically implanted.

my suggestion honestly is try the shots....sometimes they work wonders for people taking away almost all pain and sometimes they are a waste. there is no way to tell until you actually do it. dont just throw this idea out the window it truely may help you if youre in such bad pain.

anyways just my two cents....youre gunna do what you want anyways but my thought is i will try any treatment that may take my pain away.

The dr I saw today is awesome and I am going to try the injections. The first dr didnt even look at my MRI, just the report which put me off about the injections. I offered to show her the disk and she said she "read the report and didn't need to look at the imaging" I am gonna give you an epidural nerve block ect ect. It made me feel super uncomfortable because she didn't give a fuck. This dr is giving me an injection in a different location but she took the time to look at all my tests. This dr was amazing, she even took out an anatomy book to show me exactly what was wrong with me and really put me at ease. She didn't rush me at all and made me feel very comfortable. It was worth a 45 minute drive to see a better dr. She also ordered an additional MRI because she is really concerned about what is going on with my neck. She could see the muscles spasms as they were happening.. She also believes my neck is degenerative and I possibly have arthritis as well. I am lucky to have found this dr. She even kept the disk of the MRI of my back so she could look into it farther. She prescribed me pain medication with no APAP because she wanted to look out for my liver. I literally almost cried in the office because dr's like this are so rare.

glad to hear its working out, just curious though... are your pain problems related to a injury earlier in life?

Thanks. Yea its an injury earlier in life but I dont know which injury.. I was in alot of bad car accidents, wrecked a 4 wheeler really bad played alot of sports and been in alot of fights.. so there's no telling what exactly caused it or if its not a combination of everything. I just know I am paying for it now.

It's also multiple injuries because it's my lower back and my neck.

ah okay, was just curious.
good luck with it, sounds like your new doc is what youve been looking for
