I think it would be far more accurate to say Benzos can cause depression, it is a possible but far from inevitable side effect.
I have been dealing with a Benzos issue for sometime and have been suffering fairly acute depression and anxiety issues that started before I started to abuse Benzos. I now take Effexor and have recently completed a course of CBT over the last few months my depression and anxiety have fallen massively to the point where I'm basically on the base line according to the standard testing that they use in the UK.
Due to this I have now started to deal with my Benzos use.
For me depression and anxiety are just 2 sides of the same coin, the CBT has helped me to see that even more clearly, although I fully accept we are all different.
I say this because many people with anxiety and Depressive disorders use Benzos as a means of relief, just like alcohol and other drugs, its a one step at a time process so whilst long term Benzo use is clearly a very bad idea, don't go beating yourself up about it if your depressed.
Depression and associated anxiety disorders are illnesses and usually have complex roots and are not just the result of abusing a specific drug.
Even if, in some isolated cases that were to be true, stopping taking the Benzos may not resolve the now existing illnesses of depression and anxiety.
