Since there is so little info on this one beyond "it is better than benzos" or "its useless", I decided I'll document my experience with it last night. Apologies in advance for the berevity of the report.
Backround
I was prescribed this stuff after asking for it myself as an alternative to using benzos for insomnia caused by a combination of quitting a little alcohol habit and Jet-lag. Admittedly, I was also very interested in the drug itself so I used the opportunity to try it
. Do keep in mind while reading this that I have a considerable tolerance to GABAergics as a whole. Another thing to note is that I rarely dream (or remember my dreams) normally, and that since I had a benzo habit for the past few years I had not experienced proper REM sleep for a long time.
My very compassionate doctor, bless his soul, was not familiar with this since he has never needed to prescribe it before. It turns out it is available as suppositories, powder, and syrup. According to his prescription manual, Chloral did not disturb REM sleep but us dangerously addictive (takes only 12 days for Delerium Tremens withdrawal!). And so he decided to give me the least ammount possible. Although I would have personally preferred the suppositories from a pharmacokinetic prespective, I decided to avoid further embarrasment, and so he gave me about 35ml of 500mg/5ml worth of syrup.
The pharmacy did not have it in stock, and it had to be special-ordered. Wow, is it THAT rare?
At the very end, I had a bottle of pink syrup that smelled of oranges.
Oranges?
Well, I have heard that Chloral supposedly smells bad and tastes badder. It said on the bottle to take 2.5ml (250mg) half an hour before sleep. So at 9:30pm I took said ammount. Half an hour later, I felt only very week sedation - on par with L-Theanine actually, so I took 2.5ml more.
The taste of chloral hydrate deserves a paragraph of its own. You see, it isn't quite as bad as 1,4-B (easily one of the most offensive materials on the tastebuds), but it still is, um, interesting. The oranges thing was so overpowered that it was reduced to a mere scent. The taste was somewhere between swimming pool water and the smoke of blown-out candles.
Anyway, half an hour after that experience, the sedation only increased a little, with a good ammount of relaxation, but there was no notable intoxication. However there was a strong urge to go to sleep. And so I did.
Instead of simply blacking out and waking up the next morning as I do with alcohol and benzos, I found myself very subtly pushed into a world of dreams. The dreams were extremely realistic and mundane... they were scenarios of possible events that can happen with people I know: riding around in my friend's car, having a normal conversation over coffee with my mother, walking down along the beach to meet a friend... no nightmares to recall, and no unicorns or faeries.
I did wake up exactly 6 hours later (this drug is pretty punctual with its reported elimination rate!). It wasn't so much "waking up" than it was a difficult to pin-down shift from the dream world to my bedroom - as if being in my bed at night was the logical end to whatever dream was taking place. I took 500ml more and went back to bed. And, like magic, about an hour later I found myself again in that dream world doing extremely mundane things. This time though, I was transported back and forth to my bedroom (a.k.a "waking up") a few times. I imagine this is because my insomnia was winning over accute tolerance to the drug.
There seemed to be a diuretic effect since every time I woke up I had to go pee. I did find that at these times I felt slightly dizzy when I walked, but nothing serious.
The last time I woke up it was morning and I felt very refreshed for the first time in weeks. There was no groginess, but a slight headache was noted. This went away a couple of hours later.
Conclusion
This may not be "recreational" in the sense that you'd party with it. However, I found its effects quite unlike anything I have taken before. Its effects certainly have nothing to do with GHB, Alcohol, Gabapentin-type drugs, or benzos. If anything, I'd actually say it is closest to Methaqualone but still very different and less euphoric. I can also equate it to nodding on opiates but without any of the warmth or euphoria and with more lucidity.
One thing I forgot to mention is that this substance is insanely irritating to the digestive tract as has been mentioned by Fn'B before. You don't feel the burn as you swallow but you desparately need a glass of milk to avoid the fire in the stomach.
Do keep in mind that my reaction may have been an idiosyncratic one due to my history with GABAergics and normally-disturbed sleeping patterns, plus the fact that I am experiencing jetlag at the moment.
