Chief of filth - "Time to end the war on drugs"

This is quite a significant and historical event IMO. The more prominent people in positions that will get their messages heard that spread this message must eventually make a difference. Its only logical. If every head of police came out and publically agreed, the powers that be would surely have to at least take note. But its only if and when the majority of public opinion also sings the same song that anything will change.

IMO many politicians are listening out for 'what the people want' and then promise them that in order to get elected. Of course most of the time, they dont deliver on their promises, so legalization is still a long way away. But i believe it will eventually happen. At least 2 states in the USA have decriminalised the possession of cannabis. That is a start. Will those states reverse their policy ? I doubt it. Will others follow suit ? I hope so.

It was the projected spread of AIDS actually Knock but you're right, it was at least partly based on the economic consequences of an AIDS explosion as well as social cares. But the old cow did make one right decision in her life.

As for the withdrawing labour bit blah blah..yeah and a thousand other things. I'm not being entirely serious here with the vote Tory thing. But theoretically I'm right. There is no way a socialist, or Labour come to that, government in the Uk will ever legalize drugs. Peter Lilley would have. And he's a near total cunt. God life's complex.

Time and time again governments impose their own timetable on change, not the people's. In some cases, it's (IMO) positive stuff that comes earlier than the public mood would seem to decree: ending capital punishment, decriminalising homosexuality are two noteworthy examples.

But the government, business and the media are locked in a controlling embrace on the public mood. I don't blame the public for being reactionary, in a society devoid of community people will cling to anything that represents stability and the known.

Yeah I know you're not about to doorstep for the tories don't worry :) I thought there had to be a tongue somewhere in that cheek ;)

This is what I mean about "no community". We live in a society where the police feel it's their responsibility to be the guardians of our children. :|

I think you're right about homosexuality Knock. I'm still stunned at the general backwardness of general public opinion even in a big modern city like Manchester. There is still a massive block of homophobia and racism that still goes totally unchallged. In fact IME people seem more 'enlightened' and tolerant in little rural backwaters than they are in the big cities. Its very puzzling.

It might be something to do with what must be absolutely shite standards of education these days, or that lots of people are anti education, and proud to be ignorant twats. I dont know, its just my experience and how things seem to me.

I dunno, I mentioned absence of community breeding reactionary attitudes in my post. People in cities often live with a general level of fear and isolation that people in rural backwaters do not. Not all backwaters, like, but many. Also a lot of backwaters these days are the exclusive preserve of a certain class of people, thanks to the property prices in those rural idylls. They can afford progressive views.

On the other hand I bet there are more actual, out-of-the-closet homosexuals in the cities than in the backwaters, proportionately... for a start there is (probably!) better access to other homosexuals in the cities :D and on top of that, there is an anonymity about city life that you don't get in some wee village. Maybe a homosexual can help us out here =D
