A man has been arrested in connection with an alleged cricket betting scam carried out during the fourth Test between Pakistan and England at Lord's.

Mazhar Majeed, 35, is being held on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud bookmakers.

"Following information received from the News of the World, we have arrested a 35-year old man on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud bookmakers," a spokesman for London's Metropolitan Police said.

The brother and business partner of Mazhar told The Associated Press that he thought the reports were "just rubbish".

Azhar Majeed confirmed his brother had been arrested.

"I found it not laughable because you don't laugh at things like that, but I thought it was just rubbish," Azhar Majeed said.

News of the World reported that members of the Pakistan team were involved in cheating in the fourth and final Test, the Sunday tabloid alleging that two Pakistan bowlers had delivered three blatant no-balls to order.

A few no balls here or there don't have any affect on results but doubt now exists over several games that at the time appeared suspect. It is sad that such a great cricketing nation is forever embroiled in cheating and match fixing. I understand they are some of the poorest paid players in international cricket but a young bowler like Mohammad Aamer is at 18 a potential super star. It is a blight on Pakistan cricket that a player with unlimited potential should be encouraged to cheat by senior players.

I can see the only fair solution is to ban Pakistan out right from international cricket for 5 years until they prove that their board has control over it;s players.

i'm not a cricket fan and as you said the "no balls" are just minor, but i saw the video with the guy and the stack of money in front of him, and how the "no balls" were played as instructed and i was revolted beyond words can describe. only two words escaped my lips, they started with M and F.

really, how can there not be a ban?
