Australia is a big place, do some research so you can narrow down your criteria as to what in particular you're looking for in your place of residence. Asking what city, rental agency, buildings, bookstores, cafes and bike shops doesn't help much - most cities and towns will have all of the above.
What kind of lifestyle are you after? Do you want to live in a big city, the suburbs or a quieter regional or country town? Is a 24 hour lifestyle where you can find something open and happening at any time or day important to you, or would you prefer a more laidback pace?
Other questions to consider include things like:
-
Transport. Are you planning on buying a car, or will you be relying on public transport?
-
Employment. What field will you be seeking employment in? Have you done any research as to whether you'll realistically find a job to support you, and where you'd be most likely to find one?
-
Climate. Australia is a big country and climate varies considerably from place to place. The southeastern states, NSW, Victoria and Tasmania in particular, can get very cold in winter. Heat can also reach extremes, and bushfires are a natural part of the climate regime in many areas of Australia.
-
Hobbies and recreational activities. You've mentioned bike shops - is an area with proficient cycling paths important? Do you want to live close to a forest or wilderness area? Do you want to live near the ocean?
What about sports? Is attending large sporting events, of playing sport yourself, important to you?
Nightlife. Is a thriving bar and club scene important? A live music scene? How important is the food and art scene to you?
What sort of price range are you looking for? 'Cheap' means something different from person to person. The cost of living in Australia is generally quite high.
There are many more questions you will want to consider before settling on your new home. However, we'll be able to provide some general information, ideas and pointers when you specify in more detail what are the most important lifestyle desires you have .
I want to visit wherever the hell that phone call to the royals came from.
