Charlottesville, Virginia

There are tricky legal semantics.

I want to make clear that you can't be locked up JUST for making "hate speech".

Not the same as having a RIGHT to say "hate speech".

A summary of what is and is not specifically protected at the supreme court website.

did you read the article?

he was convicted of: breach of the peace (by interfering with Toronto Transit Commission service); causing a disturbance (by using insulting language) and breaching his probation on the earlier hate-mongering conviction.

he was not "arrested and imprisoned for hate-speech" and when you have to mischaracterize a case - which is there in black and white - to make your point, then you really have no point
He was in breach of his probation on an earlier hate-speech violation, and this is what caused the judge to give him jailtime for that breach of probation.

He was harassing a family on the street, taking photos of them and insulting. That's certainly breaking the law. Why are you defending this?

I'm not sure how Canada does probation, but doesn't probably in the US have pretty wide leeway in what actions they can restrict?

For example, we normally have freedom of assembly, but probation terms can prohibit one from owning weapons, allowing random drug testing and searches of one's residence, restricting ability to travel to certain places or be with certain people, etc.

You are at the Judge's mercy on probation. At least in my experience, there's a pretty big space for handwritten instructions beyond the standard. I think she could order you to never use the "F" key on a keyboard if she wanted.

I think of those bastards in halfway houses, who are by necessity associating with criminals. Anecdotally, at least one of them will have contraband, which means the parole officer can bust your ass whenever he feels like it. No 4th amendment rights either.

I think felons even lose certain rights forever in some states, like the right to vote, which I always think is the least democratic thing you could do.

Daily Mail?
Should I assume it's actually the opposite, and the right want to put statues UP?

FFS, pick a public statue anywhere, someone wants it down. That in no way diminishes the fucked-up nature of Jim Crow memorials.

But it's the name of the town!

EDIT: oh, it's not EVEN the name of the town.
Still the Daily Mail, so it might be.

That doesn't change:

a) the Daily Fail being a Murdoch tabloid and source of sometimes entertaining garbage
b) what I said above about how it doesn't change anything about why confederate statues should come down
c) that this is not that thread.

And yet, I still don't care about that statue. At all.

Now, Thanksgiving is an entirely different thing. It's a great meal with lots of great leftovers. That's something worth fighting for!!

FFS dude, that article doesn't even mention Columbus, its about canada's first non-beaver prime minister. But you know, I'm sure I can find someone of whatever color you want to say whatever you want for a quote and some cash.

It doesn't change the fact that the statues are in the next thread over.

Or that wild turkeys are a true menace. They like to embarrass you for a solid mile down the road, in front of drivers who do nothing more than laugh and take pictures. A single day of turkey slaughter isn't enough.

I posted immediately below you and referred to the article that you linked, I was talking to you
Okay good. Next time please quote me

Where exactly did I defend him?? All I said was its interesting how the laws differ from the US vs. Canada.

So now again, where did I say I defended him??
Can you please post the exact quote where you claim I defended him??

I said "defended this" because it seemed you were trying to minimise this guys offense as merely hate speech when it was actually harrassment.
