Holy shit. I just saw the most bullshit story on marijuana i have seen in a freakin long time! It was just on the sunday 7 show and was based around a supposed "ex stoner" who couldnt remember like 15 years of his life or some crap ! haha. I swear this guy was a fucking actor. Some of the lines he gave..it was as if he was paid to say some of the shit he said.

Mean while they are cutting to and from scenes of raids and voice overs telling us that the weed of today is up to 20 x stroner then the 70's etc etc. The usual predictable same old shit that they dredge up every few weeks/months to tell idiots.

I couldnt believe it. This one psycologist was sitting there saying that pot WILL give everyone schitophrenia 100% every time you smoke it. He was saying it is evil etc etc..

They kept calling it a "hyrbrib super drug" lol...wtf!??!?! I mean i get some pretty good weed but i wouldnt stretch it to hybrid super drug haha!

And ive seen studies that show the weed of today is barely 3% higher in THC levels.

I mean come on

I was literally sitting there saying to my gf that it was all bullshit lol.

Just told me to stfu...then another chick came on saying IT WILL NOT GIVE YOU PSYCOSIS. I KNOW YOU DISAGREE....BUT ITS TRUE. THERE IS NO LINK!!

PLEASE give me your thoughts lol!

Just as i was punching a cone this shit came on haha..

Yeah my mum comes in and tells me to watch it. I felt like saying it's just gonna be some government funded bullshit where they take an extreme case that is somewhat related to the drug and blow it completely out of proportion.

It was... The only point they got across to me is that there's a link between being a ranga and developing psychosis from weed lol.

HOWEVER... they did show both sides of the story (although blatantly obvious which side they agreed with) and trippar i do believe you are exaggerating a little bit :). They claimed it was at least 3x more potent than 15 - 20 years ago not 20x and the psychologist wasn't saying that weed has a 100% chance of giving you psychosis.

This story prompted me to look for an unbiased report on some of the things they brought up in the story. All I could find was conflicting research and arguments being presented by both sides: Drug users in denial and Anti-drug users spitting out the same myths they have for decades.

Could anyone point me to an unbiased (as unbiased as possible) source. i really would like to know how damaging my habits are.

Wake-up call for teen pot smokers

YOUNG adults who used marijuana as teens were more likely than those who didn't to develop schizophrenia and psychotic symptoms, a seven-year Australian study found.

Those who used the drug for six or more years were twice as likely to develop a psychosis such as schizophrenia or to have delusional disorders than those who never used it.

Research involving more than 3800 young adults, released online by the Archives of General Psychiatry, found long-term users were also four times more likely to have psychotic-like experiences.

The findings, by the Queensland Brain Institute at the University of Queensland, build on previous research and shows that marijuana use is not as harmless as some people think, lead study author John McGrath said yesterday in an email.

The researchers quizzed 3801 young adults who were born in Brisbane between 1981 and 1984. The participants, whose average age was about 20, were asked about marijuana use. The researchers also measured whether those in the study had psychotic symptoms.

The study was the first to look at sibling pairs to discount genetic or environmental influence and still find marijuana linked to later psychosis, the authors said.

''This is the most convincing evidence yet that the earlier you use cannabis, the more likely you are to have symptoms of a psychotic illness,'' said Dr McGrath, a professor at the institute, in a statement. ''The message for teenagers is: if they choose to use cannabis they have to understand there's a risk involved.''

Researchers were looking for causes of schizophrenia, Dr McGrath said.

Of the 1272 participants who had never used marijuana, 26 (2 per cent) were diagnosed with psychosis. Of the 322 people who had used marijuana for six or more years, 12 (3.7 per cent) were diagnosed with the illness. Overall, 65 people were diagnosed with psychosis, the study said.

The researchers also found those who used marijuana the longest were four times more likely than those who didn't to have the highest scores derived from a list of psychotic-like experiences.

Dr McGrath said even those who used marijuana for fewer than three years still had an increased risk of scoring higher than those who had not.

''Apart from the implications for policy makers and health planners, we hope our findings will encourage further clinical and animal-model research to unravel the mechanisms linking cannabis use and psychosis,'' the authors wrote.

Those in the study were interviewed at the ages of 14 and 21, so the symptoms emerged between those two study periods, Dr McGrath said.

The study also showed that among 228 sibling pairs, those who didn't use marijuana reported fewer psychotic-like delusions compared with those who used cannabis. That difference was statistically significant and reduces the likelihood that the psychotic problems were caused by genetics or environment, the authors said.

The study was funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia.

From the Herald today.

Nobody seriously denies the link between marijuana and psychosis, but people waving it around as a justification for prohibition is getting a little old. I mean, we know this shit, obviously using a drug heavily can potentially have side effects.

I actually agree with some of the things said in the program.

I've seen two friends fall into schitzophrenia over the past couple years, after only one or two years of solid every day smoking.

I have also witnessed first hand the short term memory loss. Two days ago I lost my iPhone and pet ferret on the same day because I was a stoned mess. I hadn't toked in a couple weeks prior and I hadn't lost anything in that time.

Short term memory loss turns into long term memory loss when you're smoking every day. Being without memory for a day is alright, but get stoned every day and you're without memory for 365 days a year. After a year of that you can't remember anything you did in the past year. I think that's what happened to the guy on the program. He was just punching too many cones too often so his whole past is a haze.

While they did overaccentuate on most things, I do believe they partially had some grounds with what they were saying.

Smoking every day is detrimental to your health but more so to your mind. Be careful and really try to smoke in moderation. I try to keep it to weekends.

This is how you control the masses, you provide absolute rubbish information about something that the common man doesnt have general knowledge about.

Problem is, a lot of idiots out there truly believe the sensationalised commercial news networks. Channels 10,9 and 7 are absolute shit and any "news" that they provide should never be trusted. Although this goes for pretty much all media outlets, these commercial channels are there to make money and to spread bullshit propaganda.

The amount of utter crap that I have heard people say about drugs in general astounds me. And Im afraid a lot of this bullshit that people keep spewing as gospel only adds fuel to the raging fire of the international War on Drugs.

*ends rant*

that is as good as it gets demanufacture,

from an AOD workers point of view most of the people we see with mental health presentation which includes psychosis, schizophrenia, bi polar disorder usually list cannabis as something they use regularly.

so far there is no evidence to suggest the definate way that cannabis causes pyschosis only that people who use it have a higher risk of developing these symptoms- mind you a psychosis usually isnt a short term thing that medication will just whip away- it is a trauma like event.

there are plenty of cannabis harm reduction information out there worth looking into.

@klue
Interesting survey, but I said this in another page just the other day, that surveys like that lose so much credability if they don't rule out the use of other drugs.

"Of the 322 people who had used marijuana for six or more years, 12 (3.7 per cent) were diagnosed with the illness" Of those 12 how many also abused other drugs? Maybe not even abused, but I guarentee you, most people who have used marijuana for 6 or more years have most likely tried other things.

Without ruling that possiblity the survey has NO GROUND TO STAND ON! >.<

Although I do think their is a link between the two, I would like to see the whole survey and exactly what questions have been asked.

*Drugs are bad - Repeat ad nauseum. Must be an election year ;)

On a serious note. I detest one sided journalistic exercises in the demonization of drug use, to suit the short sided propaganda machine of government.

*and i realise any drug use/life has inherent risks, those risks must be considered in the course of choosing to consume. An informed choice is a considered choice.

I saw it as well.

TripppARl; I believe the "experts" rough words were "Modern Hydrophonic cannabis has been shown by some studies to be 10, 15 or 20 times more potent than it was 30 years ago"

That line came right after the 7 "news reporter" said more and more people are becoming "strung-out on super strong hydroponic marijuana". It sounded like a 70's reefer madness video...

Also one interesting thing to note. The young bloke who was the focus of the program has only stopped smoking marijuana 3 weeks previous (or so he says). The brain function/memory test was misleading. When the results were recieved that said very little except that marijuana has significantly effected his memory skills for life.

They made absolutely no mention of the difference between the short term and long term effects of marijuana. The presenters made it out to be that marijuana was the sole and only reason for the young mans problems.

It also became evident to me that the young male deatured in this program wasn't exactly the sharpest tool in the shed. He was obviously looking blame marijuana for all the problems in his life. At the end of the program it showed him at his apartment and he said something along the lines of "I just sit on my couch all day...marijuana has ruined by brain". This was after he had been off marijuana for 3 weeks.

The arguments put forward in this program were almost entirely one-sided and it was obvious to see the producers had an agenda (to demonise marijuana). Many comments and scenes were obviously scripted and setup.

Yes, some information was true, but the way in which it was presented was utterly attrocious. Barely any reputible sources were referenced. The program contained mainly subjective comments and guesswork in order to prove it's point.

Weed does have some hefty ties with psychosis.. It happens in alot of long time smokers... and none of them will blame the drug of course... but its tied in with their condition, and in my mind is no doubt a contributing factor to their mental health problems.

Weed needs more demonization because its links to youth use (generally the first drug most people try) and links to long-term use without cessation

So they get the worst case weed smoker, of course it's going to be terrible.

They should show it verses the heavy alcohol abuser

and heavy smoker abuser.

I bet all their lifes are ruined. Moderation is the key.

Correlation =/= Causation

I think that these people need to learn what both of those mean.

From the beginning it's absolutely laughable the questions they ask him, who give a shit about remembering these days anyway and political faggots.. Needs to stop living in the past and figure out what he needs and wants to do. What does he want to do other than smoking weed? It seems like nothing cos he is still a lazy fucker but just without his weed now. Maybe he cant get of the couch cos he cant remember how to..
