Change in cocaine effects

Cocaine quality aside (I know this plays a part) swim isn't experiencing the same pleasure with cocaine anymore and wants to know why.

Swim has used recreationally once or twice per month on average on and off for 5 years. Sometimes many months have passed with no opportunity for use.

Swim used to feel euphoria, empathy, and would be very chatty and open. Now, swim is still like that at times if alcohol is also being used but those feelings are quickly overshadowed by anxiety and paranoia. Swim has even laid in bed afraid to make a noise or movement and has peaked out of windows and felt like Law enforcement night show up and kick down the door. Instead of being social, it has the opposite effect of wanting to hide in a dark room.

What changed? Is it the quantity? Does swims brain no longer process the effects the same?

Even without cutting it, (which they probably did) after a while some peoplesbrains react to Iit differently. This can happen with prescription stimulants too. You should cut down, then quit. It sounds like maybe your brain has had enough?

But that drastic? Swim remembers it was like euphoria and open ness. Swim could have long conversations and enjoy it. Now swim says it feels like pure speed and anxiety and paranoia unless drinking heavily

This is very common with many drugs and coke is the Sultan of doing this. The drug has begun to turn on you. In my extensive knowledge, experiences of many others I witnessed, and personal experience, the phenomenon you are begining to experience is irreversible and progressive. i know completely "normal" people who had coke addictions take them so far down this line that can not even take a small half line, after years or coke abstinence, with out pretty much instantly breaking into that awful paranoia. Really a little bit and they are peaking out the blinds. This phenomenon and its progressive nature is thought to be a reverse tolerance or developing increasing hypersensitivity. This also has a strong relation to acquiring a coke addiction. The real hell of coke can kick in at this point. The reason for this is that even when all positive effects have disappeared and have been instead replaced with ever increasing awful result, that if taken far enough produce effects so awful that i can honestly associate them with what i would expect hell to be like, but even though we know we will recieve almost no positive results and instead are thrown instantly into an awful miserable place, addicts still find themselves driven to use at a level thats impossible to resist.

I often shake my head at people who think addicts do drugs to feal amazing, so they think people just love the pleasure so much they eventually chose to indulge. nothing is farther from the truth. i remember distinctly writing in a journal i created where I would write exactly how I was going to feal right after I used the first dose when I was trying to work through an awful coke addiction. Time after time I would write that in a few minutes I will be catapulted into hell with little or no positive feeling coming at all. Yet I was driven to use over and over and over, even though I knew I would not get anything even close to pleasure and would instead experience the most awful things. This blew my mind at the time, why was I being driven with an almost irresistible drive to do something that would instantly make me feal insane and utterly awful. Addiction has nothing to do with feeling good, period.

I would pull the rip cord on the coke. If you find that you are still doing it even though your getting nothing but bad experiences, the i would seriously consider seeking out some help for a possible addiction. A coke addiction can drop us to incredibly awful places. so i would find away to pull the rip cord perminatell on the white lady or you could end up meeting hooded man, or the hat man (some refer to him as the government man)

Here is a thread that contains possible experiences if you continue down this road for a bit. not trying to scare you, just letting you know what to expect from someone who has passed through there. It also may seem that im exaggerating, but i truly am not.

Who are the shadow people?

If I were you, I would go on a moderately long hiatus and abstain from using cocaine or other stimulants for at least 3 months and at most 1 year. Cocaine is one of many drugs that can result in tachyphylaxis (sudden decrease in efficacy).

I used to use cocaine every day when I was around 18. Within a couple months it stopped working completely when administered intranasally. Only intravenous administration produced any stimulation. I knew then that something was not right—namely, I was using too damned much too damned often. And so I stopped.

Now, at the age of 20, I only use cocaine occasionally. The euphoria and psychostimulation have returned to pre-abuse levels. Perhaps this is merely idiosyncratic. But my method seems worthy of replicating, do you think?

Thank you for the responses. They are very insightful.

What you describe is exactly what swim is experiencing. It is disappointing because swims use at this point is very infrequent and has been for a few years.

There was a two year sons where use was almost weekly, maybe 3 grams on any given week. But it was never like a must have or anything other than being bored.

But now, the pleasure is very very brief. Alcohol is the only thing that off sets it. Then, like you've described, a very inward, antisocial and paranoid feeling takes effect. Swim started to blame this on quality of product, but there is something else to it with absolute certainty.

Is there any way to reverse this effect? How and what happens in the brain that causes this drastically opposite effect of what used to happen?

Swim has seen posts about purification like LeJunk etc and based on what is being posted here swim suspects those are just desperate efforts to reverse this negative effect and regain the positive feelings once experienced.

Hey Scolarchemist.. we do not use or allow swim or other representations for ourselves on BL. We dont use these as they provide no legal protection and make things harder to read.

Unfortunately I do not know of anything that reverses this. In fact I do not know of anything that ever reverses the effects of any of the drugs that seem to commonly turn on people. Very often heavy cannabis users will have it turn on them in their early to mid thirties and what used to cause relaxation and euphoria instead causes anxiety and paranoia.

When you take alcohol with coke, these two actually chemically bind in the liver when both are present in the blood stream and combine to create cocaethylene . Cocaethylene is thought to be even more cardiotoxic then the two used separately. I is also thought to also be more neurotoxic as well. Coke already flies so fast through the blood brain barrier that some people feal it has the potential to damage the barrier. It is also thought that its extremely quick passage through the BBB creates levels of heat that could damage surrounding brain tissue and possibly the BBB itself.

This is also the reason people who have taken alcohol and coke together a bit, will often find that its hard for them to take one without the other. Many people find if they are drinking they will crave coke and they are on coke they will crave alcohol.

many people will get into trying to synergize alcohol, coke, and benzos together to try and alleviate the negative symptoms. They usually end up enjoying little to no success with this. These attempts also usually produce some pretty awful hangovers.

I would try getting like forty minutes of aerobic exercise before the days you plan on useing. Aerobic exercise has very significant effects on a persons neurotransmitter production and levels and may create an environment in your brain that will produce results more like the ones you are looking to return to. Also thirty minutes of exercise usually obliterates any rock hangover you may get. So many people shovel in a ton of booze and pills at the end in an attempt to skip the end of session jones so common with coke. People will call me crazy but this actually ends up making them fiend way worse, does not get them to bed any earlier, and often makes them feal like they were repeatedly run over by a garbage truck when they wake up the next day. People usually blame allot of this on the coke. I tried to skip the comedown on coke with the use of benzos and booze. After many years of making this mistake I learned better. Alcohol may take away a little of the paranoia, but it ends up binding with the coke to produce even stronger effects. It also weakens the PFC which ends up making the end of session cravings much stronger and resisting them that much harder. It also kicks the negative effects a person is likely to feal the next day way up. The use of benzos does not IMO or IME facilitate any faster a come down either. Before I gave it up for good, I would no longer mix the coke with booze or benzos. My resultant paranoia and anxiety went down significantly. I would no longer fiend after the supply was gone, would be able to fall asleep at the same time or before others who were synergizing to try and come down, and I would wake up feeling infinite echelons better then they did.

I learned you can do large amounts of blow and as long as its not mixed with a bunch of other stuff, wake up feeling pretty good the next day and any little blow hangover can be utterly obliterated with thirty minutes of exercise and a good meal.

Exercise and Brain Neurotransmission
Neurobiology of Exercise

I truely was amazed at how many of the symptoms I always blamed on the coke ended up to disappear when I took the other drugs out of the equation. With the coke and booze we just slip into that constant cycle of dose coke get edgy, dose booze want more coke, dose coke get edgy, dose booze want more coke, coke, booze, coke, booze, coke, booze.. so the coke allows and causes us to drink a tanker full of alcohol, and the alcohol allows and causes us to use large amounts of coke. This can produce an experience were we really just spend the whole time compulsively chasing that feeling that never comes or just appears for a tiny moment and we rocket past or plummet below.

There are memories called "reward memories." These are "memories" that the brain has linked with a previous successful goal that was accomplished. If a goal has been achieved there is a resultant "dopamine rush" or rather a stimulation of the mesolimbic dopamine reward pathway. Accomplishing anything essential to the promotion or sustenance of life naturally causes this. Sex, eating, drinking, etc all naturally cause this. When this happens the brain logs in a whole bunch of sensory information realted to the successful accomplishment. It does this so that that the next time it registers similar sensory information it can recognize the potential to achieve a goal that would promote success in life for it or the species.

The subconscious is constantly scanning and analyzing all the sensory input our senses register. When it comes across sensory input that has been associated with an acquired reward in the past, it realizes there is a chance to obtain this reward and it will drive us to seek and obtain any possible reward. By using drugs that stimulate the mesolimbic reward pathway we essentially log the use of the drug into this system. Addiction is when the system starts to drive at its use as if it was a goal needed to promote or sustain life.

Example of this in natural setting. You are walking down the street thinking about what music you want to buy and where you want to go with that special someone later on in the day. You walk by a barbeque and the reward pathway is monitoring all the sensory input and your nose has picked the sent of steak grilling. It has determined that getting some of that steak would be beneficial in your life. It goes to work to drive you to obtain that reward.

Even though three seconds before you were not hungry and food was the last thing on your mind. You now find that you are suddenly starving, the old "I had no idea how hungry I was." Your mouth begins to water. Your stomach can begin to growl. You can experience memories of times you have eaten barbecue. They are often very vivid and depict very positive experiences you have had eating similar foods. The old "it smelt so good I could almost taste it" and "it was all I could think about." The reward center in our brain recognized the possibility to achieve a reward and has begun driving you to obtain the steak.

The "reward memories" are the very positive memories of very pleasurable experiences in the past. They are not accurate memories. "Reward memories" are "memories" that have all the negative aspects cut out. The "reward memories" have all the negative aspects removed and seem to have all the positive experiences increased. They are one of the tools that the reward center of the brain uses to manipulate us into obtaining what it wants. So it sends these memories of bliss and pleasure, so we say HELL yeah I going to figure out how to get some of that. They are fantasies.

In your post you say that you remember the use of the drug being very pleasant and desirable. The use of the coke was undoubtedly more pleasurable in the begining. But I think that your memories of the experience of past use may not be accurate. They seem to be reward memories. They heighten the good and leave out any bad.

Im sure you have heard the statement that addicts "are always chasing that first high," but they can never obtain it. The reason they can never obtain that first high is likely two fold. First, tolerance and other adjustments made in the brain prevent this. Second, and probably more substantial is that the high they are chasing, never happened. It is a memory that has been tampered with and what they seek is not possible. But we remember this amazing, highly desirable experience, so we say HELL YEAH, im going to find a way to experience that amazing feeling again. Then we do it and are like what the hell, that was not how I remember it.

It was a hard for me to wrap my head around this at first and more than a little creepy when I realized we cant trust our own memories and in fact that they are designed by a part of our brains to manipulate us.

You may be developing an addiction to the coke. Not saying you are, but I would at least keep an open mind to the possibility.

So the next time the white lady whispers and caresse your mind saying that she will make you feal like you're in heaven.. Call that caucasian slut out on her lies.. She lies and lies and lies.. She whispers that she will make you feal amazing and instead plunges you into misery. Learn to call that wretched demoness out on her lies and you wont get played. Everytime she lies.

Who she pretends to be.
