Chances of Inheriting Schizophrenia

Just to add something in this thread: schizophrenia and bipolar disorder appear to affect the exact same genes and there is an exactly equal likelihood of inheriting one or the other if your father has schizophrenia. Just something to take in mind as well.

I think personality disorders also pass through families, though this is just my opinion, I have no studies backing this up.

I'd say the chances are likely, but not most likely.

I'm sorry, but I must dissent on this. Statistics are in the OP's favor - there's roughly an 87% chance he will NOT ever receive a diagnosis of schizophrenia. I am not implying you are being alarmist, but the odds are in his favor by a lot. I myself am in the 87% - anecdotally. I'd hedge a bet that the OP isn't going to become schizophrenic. Please refer to the link in my first post in this thread regarding studies and statistics on the matter.

The only people who are fully qualified to diagnose are the OP's mental health team, which he should see, the sooner, the better.

Do you have statistics or studies to support this? There is no reason to sound the alarm bells at present.

I'm going to agree with Mariposa on this one and say that I am willing to bet you will be just fine. I would recommend seeing a doctor though, and not even because of the very slim chance you may become schizophrenic but because it sounds like you are struggling with other issues at the moment and seeing a psychologist or psychiatrist may help you decipher and even treat some of your problems. You can also discuss your concerns regarding schizophrenia with a doctor and they will be able to provide you with completely legitimate information as well as monitor your mental condition. I'm sure having someone with a PhD tell you that your chances of inheriting schizophrenia are VERY slim will make you feel much better about the whole thing in addition to being able to work through your current feelings (or lack thereof).

Good luck in the future =)

13% is a likely chance for anything, but it's not most likely; just as I stated.

With all due respect, 13% is plenty enough reason for me to alarm the OP and anyone else who cares to listen.
