This becomes personal when you have young children in the fight.
this "becomes personal" when some of the closest people to me/anyone simply want legal recognition that they are a couple, or open acceptance of the idea that they are not an "unnatural abomination".
this becomes personal when you grow up in the middle of a city of people holding your extremist "family values" (when did family values become equivalent to anti gay?) with more churches per capita than anywhere in the midwest*, and you see the suicides and torn family ties, and peoples' senses of alienation and division and self-hatred and guilt for things that deserve no such emotions.
we can love who we want to love. period. and you cannot indoctrinate your children into not being gay... you would probably wind up severely damaging them and their chance at happiness if you tried, particularly if they are gay.
Buddy you have got serious problems in logic
he's not running on logic. and the emotion he should be running on, empathy, is being actively blocked.
politics isn't about helping you feel better by making sure that gays know their place. your kids don't give a flying fuck about gay issues, they're just fucking kids. there are so many more important things we could do, to alleviate others' suffering and alienation. but you want to focus on ensuring that the next generation is also bitterly divided over the gay issue, and hates themselves/their neighbors who/that may or may not be gay?
I'm not attacking anyone.
i want a future where all of us participate and are tolerated. you want a future where a large proportion of us are discriminated against, or worse. your policies do participate in an attack on these people systematically, you can't deny that.
we CAN all get in this together. that's what the powers that be are afraid of... and why do i have hope that we can all get in it together? we're making progress. your closed cubbyholes of thought have been under successful assault through the entirety of human history, but accelerated during the enlightenment period, and then further during the century of information technology. we're connecting, and making progress on all fronts, despite those who aren't able to change themselves.
* just found out, also the second most strip clubs per capita than any city in the U.S.
