come on, man.... this stuff again. ..
okay..*sigh*
More of a response to your general poking at America as some sort of evil empire on this page and in other threads.
Much of it is sincere, much of it is jest. I put a bit back into the jovial to and fro between the yanks (americans) and the skips (australians) here.
And im not exactly anti-Chinese, like so many Americans are. However I would be very wary of the type of censorship and control that their government exerts over their population. They do not allow average citizens to be politically active and power in their country is controlled by a few elite, even more so than in america.
Have a look at the sociological concept of power-distance. trust me, within the cultural context, people are happier in china than in most western places. also, the idea of political involvement is different to what we are used to. their one party system reaches all the way down to children in school, those who behave are rewarded with like kids club membership (you see some kids around with red scarves). there is a system to get into political roles. there are avenues to raise concerns to the government.
and remember, in any large group of people, it is impossible to keep everyone happy. now expand that to 1.6B.
It could be argued that one of the major reasons they have been held in check from expansion in the region is because of fear of America. Be careful what you wish for as far as China controlling Southeast Asia and beyond.
If any moron tries that argument, they'd be completely wrong. There is no record of China ever exerting push on external territories (don't even start with that hong kong/taiwan/tibet bs).
And I think it is saying a lot that things are better than in the cruel regimes of the past. America could easily be much more cruel to the rest of the world for its benefit then than it currently is (and especially since the end of the cold war until now). There is a stabilizing effect on the international political environment when one state holds the vast majority of power and I would say that (with a few exceptions) America has done a pretty good job at it.
lol, yeah that's what the hype machine says. Actions on the other side, which speak far more than propaganda, clearly indicate that american exertion of influence is one of the world's major antagonising forces. Many of the internal disputes in south america, africa and asia over the last 30 years are subsequent to the u.s. assisting one side over another for some ideological or even outright illegal reason.
I realize this must sound very high and mighty coming from an American, but believe me, I am aware of numerous problems with my country. There are some things that irk me so bad I want to beat the shit out of whoever came up with the idea. However, its human nature to focus on the bad and take the good for granted and I think the world tends to do that when they consider Americas involvement in the international arena.
not so much high and mighty as led astray. you don't sound boastful or gloating, so don't worry about that.
Another note on China, they are backing Asad in Syria right now. If China becomes a global hegemon, you can bet they will back the authoritarian elements in foreign conflicts, which is not good for the world as a whole IMO.
Actually just last week a chinese delegation went to syria to tell them to chill the fuck out.
