that quote is a basic fact of anywhere
Sure, but as Toqueville and even Howard Zinn have said, it has potential to be much worse in the American Democracy. Unfortunatley, it has come true for most countries that adopted democratic rule. It's one thing to be poltically oppressed by a few "at the top" and entirely another really shitty one to have to be poltically oppressed by a majority of your peers for speaking a non-mainstream opinion.
Giving everyone a vote empowers and gives this political majority a sense of duty to throw thier weight around. A little disinformation and ostracization here and there can help a relatively few achieve power over this majority and therefore have power undreamed of in the old aristocracies and monarchies.

The Soviets finally left behind their quota for capitalism and we now "liv[e] in the age of pragmatism". The better question is "where are the totalitarians once called communists"? They're out-managing capitalism better than democracy. God help us if they become a major consumer economy, who will build their Christmas? Can "democracy" readily be a producer? I can only think of an answer in a question, does Putin shit in the woods? It's possible

^- Let's be honest - improper grammar is a growing problem.

Coordinating conjunctions, eg, "and", can be used to begin sentences when followed by independent clauses. There's a mere skipped period at the end.
