Cannabis Legalisation (UK/US) For or Against

For!

For all the right reasons, for my country, for the world.

For that pipe-scraping stoner who's got the blues,
for that poor kid with no hemp shoes.

For that president who never inhaled,
for that paint-huffing homeless guy
buying gold coat on sale.

For better food, for bunnies,
for funnier Sunday Funnies.

For!

AGAINST

My brother was taken away to a mental asylum against his will after smoking an entire package of marihuana cigarettes. I could never conscientiously support the legalization or decriminalization of this EVIL HERB peddled by cocaine-crazed negro dealers and mexican migrant workers!

i'm against it because of tax. honestly, if public funds weren't so fucking outrageously mismanaged in most of the western world i'd be for it but since they are i'll never pay a tax i don't absolutely have to.

But with controls similar to alcohol, maybe even a bit stricter. I would hate to see everyone growing six dozen plants in their yards... it really does make the neighborhood reek. Limits of 1 or 2 plants per household. Limits for legal possession (maybe under 8oz. for personal use). Fines for unauthorized sales (don't want everyone & his mom to become dealers - make sellers get a license). Big fines or jail time (repeat offenders) for selling or giving to minors. Tokers may need to be licensed too - then the license can be revoked for DUI or illegal selling or whatever.

Part of the problem is that weed is easier to hide than booze and young kids could more easily use & hide weed. I'm talking like <14 or so... their brains are still developing and too much weed or alcohol can create lifelong problems.

The thing is that there is so much shit that would revolve around legal weed that it becomes a huge mess. Look at the situation in Cali now... it's creating massive social problems even though it's small scale and regulated.

Real, meaningful legalization is going to have to move step by step. Start with decriminalization of small amounts for personal use. Keep it like that for a couple of years: study how people use the herb, demographics, volume, etc. Watch the statistics re: arrests, medical problems, weed in schools, etc. Then move to the next level.

Again, as an herb smoker I fully support eventual legalization, but for now I'd just be happy if the man would just leave me alone!

I'm for the decriminalization/legalization of cannabis and other drugs.

I'd want to hypothetically be able to grow my own and at least have it decriminalized like it is in Spain where you can own/use hash and herb in your own home and it's perfectly fine.

Or have it like the Dutch do where there are coffee shops where you can go and smoke or buy it but the penalties are high if you drive under the influence.

I once saw some essay about legalization that argued that it should be legal to grow, buy, and sell just like tomatoes are.

I tried finding it online but I saw this years ago.

Fuck the corporatization of weed.... i wanna keep it underground.

For example if cannabis was made legal in the UK/US just like in Netherlands, this would increase the amount of Jobs in this country...opportunity for new business development, increase in tourism/nightlife... there would be a large amount of money made from taxes paid on cannabis. I think it would also decrease crime rate as people would be chilled out.

^^ This.

I personally believe the people who are against it have simply not researched all the facts. For example, people who say it causes mental illness might not be aware that even if it does cause mental illness it's probably only a problem in people who smoke it as adolescents and even if it does cause it the lifetime risk is only increased marginally. I can't remeber the exact stats but if the risk is one in a thousand and doubles, it's still only two in a thousand. Legalisation won't necessarily increase availability to kids. With it being illegal kids can probably get it more easily from drug dealers illegally. Cannabis dispensaries aren't exactly going to supply to minors.

Legalisation will bring regulation, making it safer. If it were legal you'd never get grit weed like you do now.

That's a piss poor reply. Why don't you tell us why the 'corporatization' of weed is a bad idea?

I'm almost against it in the US, because I can just see the gov't doing everything in their power to fuck us on it.

Super high taxes, regulations on THC content, stuff like that. Tobacco is a plant you can grow just about anywhere, but cigarettes are still 5 dollars a pack...

Yes, legalize it and I will advetise it! bob marley said that or some rasta dude, anyway make it like the Netherlands and shit with people being able to go and have a choice of what they want to buy and put a limit on it maybe like they do..there will always be a black market for cannabis because 12 years olds will want to smoke it ,like I did at 12, but i was given a free joint of excellant cannabis by some old hippies and me and 3 others smoked it together in the safety of there house...

Marijuana is aplant that you can also grow about anywhere also, and cigarettes here wear i live are a little over $5 per pack with taxes...I think it should be like The Netherlands with hash/weed coffee shops and shit..My friend used to grow tobacco to smoke at his parents farm and the cigarettes tasted like shit from that tobacco, altho i suppose I am used to all the chemicals and stuff in my store purchased cigarettes...lol...

I meant to say pack, I'm doped up on cold medicine.

I agree it should be like the Netherlands, but knowing the history of our gov't, it won't be anything remotely close to that.

I'm for it, I'm in the fortunate position to vote on this in November. If the taxes on weed ever get too high you can just grow your own. Weed is much easier to cultivate and smoke than tobacco.

By the way, cannabis isn't legal in the Netherlands. It is just tolerated. I think weed should be legal in California, in some places like Santa Cruz it's already pretty tolerated.
