I've finally decided to put down in words an experience I had over two years ago, in February of 2006. It was one of the most powerful psychedelic experiences of my life and it was on cannabis, suprisingly enough.

At that point in my life I smoked pot all day, everyday, and had been for a long time. I was extremely experienced with weed and was floored by the experience that occured.

About a week before, I had my last shroom trip. I ate only 1g and it was a classic bad trip. It was a crypt trip inside a dorm room and I was feeling horrible. To get things going in a more positive direction, my friends and I went for a walk on a nearby golf course and it was covered in snow. However, it had warmed up slightly so there were pockets of melting snow. To me, the snow which was pocketed with black holes of mud, about the size of bowling balls, looked like a field of skulls. Suddenly I was trapped in a graveyard and surrounded by death everywhere. Eventually I came down and things *seemed* fine.

Well, this shroom experience must have catalyzed a massive psychic blossom inside of me. Exactly one week after tripping, my boyfriend and I got high in my dorm room. No big deal, I did this everyday. I felt a very strange energy gathering in my gut-not anxiety, but energy. We decided to go get pizza and as I was walking out my door I looked at myself in the mirror--

*BAM*!!!!!!!
[kensho]

It felt like I had been struck by lightning. As I looked at myself in the mirror, I didn't see *me*, I saw a petite female ape wearing strange fabrics. It was as though I was looking at myself from the perspective of the universe, and not from my own perspective. While gazing into my eyes, I began to feel the energy shift within me. A massive change was taking place, and I couldn't handle it. I couldn't breathe, I had to get out of my room!

My boyfriend and I ran across the street to the local pizza place, and I was still feeling this massive flow of energy. I was now floating outside of my body, outside of my MIND! Everything looked strange and out of place. My boyfriend looked like a siberian tiger (he's a red head) and everyone in the pizza place looked like an animal as well. My first thought was that I was seeing people as spirit animals, but I (wrongly) dismissed that notion as insane.

30 minutes after my Kensho experience I was moving into full blown panic attack mode. We headed to a party and I was still floating outside of myself, but watching through my own eyes. Kind of like Lotte in the movie "Being John Malkovich."

Everyone's faces looked strange, like I was tripping. Faces seemed to fall apart, and while all the constituents where there it felt as though I couldn't see the whole. I was disconnected from everyone and everything. I told my boyfriend I couldn't take it any longer and so we left and went back to my dorm. I was in this state for 3 days, and the visions of people as strange animals continued for over a year. I became afraid of watching TV and somewhat withdrew inside myself.

My kensho experience with cannabis truly ignited my journey on the spiritual path of life, and awakened me to my own biology. In retrospect it seems so silly that I was so afraid of my own biology. I AM a petite female ape who wears colored cloths! Why did this frighten me so much? Because contemporary society, and many religions, teach us that we are NOT animals. We are something better. But you know what? We're not! And that's what I felt that fateful day.

I woke up to my identity as a living, breathing part of life on planet Earth. Not something above life, but a part of the big "LIFE." I now feel infinite comfort in my unity with all living things and am eternally grateful for this experience.

That's really interesting. For something that intense to happen with some ganja is truly bizarre! I wonder if the shrooms did have anything to do with that?

Cannabis is a powerfull psychedelic, I am not at all surprised that you could have such a strong reaction a week after a bad trip. Imagine if you ate acid every day just for shits and giggles, it wouldnt seem so profound after a few monthes. Cannabis is the same way, people abuse it so often that society as a whole loses sight of its true power as a psychedelic when it is used in moderation.

I think cannabis has some of the strongest mindfuck of any psychedelic and an incredible propensity for connecting users to their niche in nature.

great TR, chicpoena! thank you SO MUCH for sharing :) <3

for those that don't know, the term kensho in buddhism denotes a sudden enlightenment experience, BAM like chicpoena wrote is the perfect descriptive :)

Kensho experiences can result in profound life-changing shifts, profuse tears, laughter, smiling, increased energy/vitality, impulse to dedicate one's life to helping others, and so on. They are often precipitated from intense zazen (sitting meditation) or similar practice. Psychedelics can precipitate a kensho experience, without a doubt, although the integration of a psychedelic-inspired kensho experience is often tremendously harder to integrate into one's daily life.

If you would like to read some excellent stories about some awakening experiences folks have had on zen retreat, check out the book "Three Pillars of Zen" and look for the story about the retreat Yasutani Roshi led. Good stuff :)

*hugs* chicpoena :) <3

amazing and trippy read, thanks. i've never heard of 'kensho' before. should be an interesting concept to explore.

Thanks S_S :)

Yes, this experience was much harder to integrate with than any of my mescaline, shroom or DMT trips. In fact, it was this experience, more than any other, that drove me to seek comfort in the "warm bosom" of opiates. I think it has to do with the fact that the doors in my head were violently flung open... too many doors opened at once and too fast and I couldn't cope.

The closer you get to the *ultimate* the harder it is to avoid the traps along the way, keep that in mind. Its one of the main reasons I cut WAY back on my psychedelic use. I now restrict to once or twice a year. If you have access to opiates it seems almost impossible to continue mind expansion without inevitably turning to opiates to numb out existential pain. The more wondrous the world becomes, the more painful it becomes.

damn duality!!

you just completley blew my mind with that. this EXACT experience happened to me last night with weed. I mean identical in everyway you describe it. eerie

I use to be a multiple times per day, every day pot smoker but quit for 2 years. just recently ive started smoking again and have been having extremely psychedelic experiences. effects that I would expect from mushrooms more than weed. infact my weed highs latley have been rivaling some of my mushroom trips.

its great because with these types of weed experiences I can attain the psychedelic effects I want with out the "commitment" that mushrooms require... only problem is im already starting to develope tolerance and noticing my weed experiences are slowly shifting back into the same ol goofy funness which is still cool but not as useful.

all I know is over this last week, cannabis has truelly proven itself to be an extremely psychedelic material when you dont have tolerance.

Ahhhhh excellent! I'm glad you had such an experience! <3

Grass is changing for me, as well. I get only as high as I desire after smoking a bowl or a blunt. It can be as mind-blowing as fungus or DMT, or as simply comfortable and warm as heroin. It gives me exactly what I need. GO WEED!

That is very weird! I've never talked to anyone else who's had a similar experience. It's awesome though, isn't it! It took a long time for me to adjust to the realizations but my life is so much richer now.

IME, cannabis puts me in touch with the earth goddess more than any other chemical, except maybe mescaline. Even then, cannabis puts me more in touch with the life forces of this planet than anything else, except maybe meditation.
