hi,

at first, please don't start flaming me for this idea i have. our dog is very old and i just want to help him. it's hard to find scientific data, so i thought maybe one of you guys might know any source.

scenario: my dog apperently has a tumor pressing somehow on his trachea. he doesn't show any signs of pain yet, but lacks of appetite some days and got really skinny the last months. also he gets short of breath easily when going for a walk.
i have a good amount of very low potency weed on hand, which i grew last year outdoors. this weed barely gets me high, so i suppose the thc levels are very low, but it definetly has some effect. i recently thought about making some butter out of it and starting by feeding him a really low dose and see how it goes. i hope to increase his appetite so that at least he eats enough for the last few months he has...

does anybody have some kind of knowledge on the effects of cannabis on dogs, or some scientific sources? if i do this i want to do it in the right way. i'd be really thankful about any useful information! i won't do this if there's some evidence that it would be bad for him but please no spam/flame. i'm serious about this.

thanks!

to the mods: feel free to move this to ADD if this question is to specific/whatever for CD. i thought i should ask here first.

THC does have an anti-tumour effect but you'd want to be using high potency medicinal cannabis and titrating your dog up with e.g. hash oil... I think animals and drugs are a touchy topic around here but if you look on PubMed I guarantee you will find something. Dogs seem to be one of the "model organisms" that researchers liked to use before SD or Wistar rats.

I don't think there is time for an anti-tumor treatment...the OP says he wants to restore the dog's appetite so it can have an easier time with the time it has left..

I own dogs and I love them very much. I couldn't bear to see one of them suffer. I have house dogs that are like part of the family, and I have some bay dogs (hunting dogs) that live in a kennel..

I lost two of my bay dogs in one day...they tangled with a large wild hog. One of them was killed outright and I had to shoot the other one. It wasn't easy to do and these are dogs that live in a kennel away from my home. I couldn't imagine shooting one of my house dogs... If it's possible that a cannabis treatment would help a dog to be more comfortable in it's last days, then I would be all for it.. I'd probably make cannabutter and feed it to him that way. The problem that I see is that restoring a lost appetite seems to be a human side effect. It may have no such value for a canine. I would ask my vet. But, then again, has any research into this particular therapy even been done?..And if it had, would my vet even be aware of it?..It sounds to me like it's not going to be easy to get the information you need to make this decision. You could just try it out and see what happens..

A friend of mine had a dog that had a tumor growing on one of his hind legs and he always seemed in pain until we smoked a bowl and he would always always always push the door open as soon as we sparked it so he could join us. Every time we got him high he seemed so much happier and in less pain, his stride was much smoother and he didnt limp at all. From my experience yes it does seem to help the pain but im not a dog and i cant be 100% on that.

it does say that its doubtful they will be approved because of the potential for abuse... But it also mentions that it increases appetites and relieves nausea.. So I wouldn't have a problem with cooking up some cannabutter or some other edibles and feeding it to my old boo..

Or make your own dogfood with a reasonable amount of THC, CBD, and CBN and do that. But you'd probably have to have a LOT of bud to keep that up.

I say go for it. What have you got to lose? Worst case scenario the dog will freak out for a while, but if there's a chance it could help him then I think it's worth the risk. I think it's great that you care about your dog so much.

FWIW, my dog Jett has always been a roach dog..when he ate his first roach, I could tell that it effected him. He just layed down and took a nap. But now,..he seems to have built a tolerance to it and he just eats one and goes about his doggy day like nothing happened. you might notice this the first time your dog ingests cannabis.

I thought I was going to come in this thread, yell at the OP, and close it...

but... Good work OP, solid thread about a dodgy subject. We don't advocate dosing someone who cannot make the choice themselves... and we're not doctors. On that ground I can't really give your dog any medical advice... but we'll see where this thread goes.

:D

thanks for all the replies. our dog is 13 years old and we know him since he was a little puppy. he is family and if i can do something than i think i will do so. my sisters are somehow opposed to the idea but i think my mum isn't that closed-minded (funny thing because she never smoked, unlike my sisters :D)

to the medical thing: i live in europe, so no medical for our old boy. but as i've said, i have some lowgrade on hand which i might use.

if i can manage it, i will try it and of course report what happened. thanks again :)

I think animals and drugs are a touchy topic around here
There's a world of difference between giving your dog acid because it's funny and giving your dog cannabis because it gives him respite from illness. The question we usually ask people is "What benefit will your animal gain from the drug?". In this case, that is obvious.

well i'm going to push this thread, because after months of thinking about it, i'm now about to do it, as my mom finally approved of it.

obviously my dog is still alive, and in pretty good condition giving his age and sickness, but he got thinnier and should really eat more. some relaxation could also help a bit. cooking the butter right now, tomorrow will be first trial. i think i will try the butter first, so i can at least gauge it's effects a bit more ;D

will report soon!

I've been pretty conflicted on this thread since it opened. Sorry, but don't report back. Hope all goes well.

7)NO DISCUSSION ON MEDICATING ANIMALS
So you've got some ketamine laying around and your dogs in distress? Take them to a Vet, not ask Bluelight. Discussion of any descript medicating animals if forbidden and will be shut down.

Main reason behind closing this is it really does blur the line of "whats acceptable" to medicate your dog with and what is not, and then it becomes up to individuals to decide. I think a blanket rule clears the confusion, so in the interest of preventing similar threads from popping up about other drugs (for instance, RC cannabinoids?)...
