Cannabis and your Heart

Yeah, some beta blockers can take a couple of hours to reach peak plasma. Also, some come in time release formulas, so you'll never get a very high concentration.

Atenolol 50mg, non time release? What about 2 hours to reach peak plasma levels, does that sound about correct?

I have very little experience with these, but am eager to try them out... I've done it maybe fifteen times in the past, to no avail, but thats probably because I popped one and then five minutes later was smoking.

Yeah, they definatly take longer than 5 minutes. Id say wait an hour and the try some bud. It should help, but it might not, I think we'd all be very interested to hear how it went.

Im going out tonight. I'll take them with me, and make an experiment of it. I will definitely report back tomorrow.

How common are the side effects of beta blockers? I've read what side effects may come, but I'm looking for percentages or even a general range. Any links? I'll keep lookin...

It depends on the beta blocker and on the side effect in question. In regards to atenolol, have a look at this.

At school, after rolling and then staying up on meth for 4 days. I had been off the meth since about 11 one day. an at about 7 in the morning the next day, when I woke up, my heart rate, laying there was about 140bpm. I got to school, and after walking from one side to the other, I was crying, bright reed face, sweating, and I was osoo weak. I go to class, sat down, and breathed so heavily anf never cought my breath for an hour. heart rate average 160bpm, sitting in ym seat with ym head down for an hour. 2nd hour gym, I tell my tecaher I can't do anything, she makes me get dressed anayway, I do warmups and run 2 laps around the gym, I practically fall down, am crying again, heart rate around 180-210bpm. I went to the nurse. Dad picks me up, go to doctor. Then says to go to hospital for tests. After an EKG, Echo Test, and holter moniter. The doctors tell me thats nothing is wrong with me, and that I have a really healthy heart compared to most peoiple my age. Although, ever since that time, my heart is always irregular, and it's more prominent when I'm high.

So ya guys, that was my sracey moment..I hope it never happens to you, and I still have no idea why it happened to me, or what could have happened.

Tried the atenolol few days ago. Worked noticably well! I still got the associated chest pain/jaw tension though:\ but the chest pain isnt so bad, just the jaw tension, shit.

But the rapidly beating heart is seriously, and suprisingly, taken care of! This truly may become a routine method for me. I dont urge anyone to try it but IMO its safe and effective.

I SUSPECT that the case is that, so long as your coronary arteries are in good shape, then the relatively modest increase in heart rate caused by cannabis is not going to do you any harm. As you say, it will just be like having a big work out

Cooles & Michaud ([1987] Stroke after heavy cannabis smoking. Postgrad Med J 63(740):511) reports a case of a patient suffering a stroke following "a heavy session of cannabis smoking"..

Alvaro et al (LC, Iriondo I, Villaverde FJ. [2002] Sexual headache and stroke in a heavy cannabis smoker. Headache 42(3):224-6) reported another case of; "a young man and heavy cannabis smoker who suffered posterior cerebral artery infarction, during his first episode of coital headache"..

Then there's Lawson & Rees ( [1996] Stroke and transient ischaemic attacks in association with substance abuse in a young man. Postgrad Med J 72(853):692-3), they reported; "A 22-year-old man with a five-year history of drug and alcohol abuse presented with a left hemiparesis preceded by three transient ischaemic attacks, two of which occurred whilst smoking cannabis", although McCarrom & Thomas ([1997] Cannabis and alcohol in stroke. Postgrad Med J 73(861):448) stressed the likely role of alcohol and/or other drugs..

Lastly, Mouzak et al (Agathos P, Kerezoudi E, Mantas A, Vourdeli-Yiannakoura E [2000] Transient ischemic attack in heavy cannabis smokers--how 'safe' is it? Eur Neurol 2000;44(1):42-4) described; "Three male patients (mean age 24.6 years) who were heavy cannabis smokers presented with transient ischemic attacks (TIA) shortly after cannabis abuse... The urine analysis was positive for cannabis metabolites. There were no other abnormal findings in the rest of the meticulous and thorough study of all 3 patients, which leads to the conclusion that cannabis was the only risk factor responsible for the observed TIA, contradictory to other studies, which support that cannabis is a 'safe' drug.."

Yup, there's evidence that stroke and cannabis use is linked. But nots not necessarily anything to do with the heart.

Do'h! I always assumed that heart attacks & strokes were related; I thought that the blood clot that builds up inside the heart/artery wall which travels to the brain and causes a stroke there also caused a heart attack. Now that I think about it, it's not even logical. Oh well, hehe.. =D

Beta blockers, if you can get them. I find it makes smoking a lot more plesant, also caffine is a lot more fun.

I have some angiotensin receptor blockers that my mum gave me; would this work equally as well?

Quick question about the strokes. Are they due to cannabis itself? Or the smoke inhaled?

Two different things. Maybe vaps could be very helpful.

I'm sure these people that had the problems weren't in optimum health before they smoked the reef.

lol Bilz0r =(. So will there ever be tests to test whether it was the cannabis itself, or just the smoke that caused all the harm.

And maybe I missed it somewhere in the thread, but why does your heart speed up after smoking? Other than paranoia. My heart beats really fast but I'm chill and am not worried. Weird.

I used to notice this with weed too. What I do is take a mild dose of xanax .25mg-.50mg whenever I start a session and it keeps my heart rate at basically normal and keeps me really calm and nice! :)
