Canker Sores... torture! :(

Not on a train, sadly.
I've had a canker-sore problem ever since I was a kid, and so does my mom. At certain periods it attacks non-stop, at others, it completely goes away. I know it isn't herpes for the fact that herpes does not leave large white/grey craters inside your mouth.

Right now I have the worst ever. I have four of them all around the inside of my lips. I can't brush my teeth (I rely on listerine, at least 6 times a day - it helps dull the pain, too), I can hardly eat or speak. I also keep gritting my teeth uncontrollably and have a constant headache from the pain :(

Does anyone have any good treatments for it? Since I arrived in Thailand, I've been having it non-stop. I assume it has something to do with the food or water or weather, or my psychological state...

do a lot of positive visualization of all the new cells in your mouth being healthy, and all of the canker sores shedding themselves. The paste that numbs and creates a protective coating is helpful too. good luck!

i have the same issue, fine most of the time but sometimes ill have like 4-8 of them and it sucks. iv had it so bad i couldnt talk or eat:(

but i can suggest some things that have greatly helped me:

stop using listerine, alcohol makes it worse, and six times a day? they must only be getting worse. get some mouthwash thats alcohol free (i use biotine as it helps in the healing of minor mouth irritation, promotes healthy enzymes in your saliva and helps combat some of the damage done to my mouth cus i have cottonmouth from smoking the ganj too much

get some toothpaste without sodium lauryl sulfate. i recommend biotine agian for the reasons i stated about its mouthwash.

since i started using biotine regularly i only get attacks when i run out so i think it really helps.

avoid acidic food and alcoholic beverages

let them dry out

apply salt to them (burns but speeds healing)

get some sort of goo to put on them, i use kanka, but as long as it protects them from abrasion with a film and not just numbs it your good

dont eat 'sharp' foods like chips and stuff like that

there is a mouthwash out there i have heard very good things about called Gly-oxide

milk of magnesia can help sooth and speed healing if used like a mouthwash

vitamin e directly on the sore helps

yogurt helps for some....

I have the same problem. I'll go without them for what feels like a long time, then all of the sudden I'll get 5 of them in the worst places possible (ie: right where the bottom lip attaches to the gums :! )

And omg does it fucking hurt when you go to brush your teeth and you scrape right across one of them....I've nearly doubled-over on the floor of my bathroom in pain from having that happen (I use ultra-stiff toothbrushes and usually press hard when I brush). Makes me cringe thinking about it.

They take forever to go away too :( I've found that when they're really unbearable, topical numbing ointments like Orajel (I think it contains lidocaine) do wonders. Unfortunately, the relief only lasts for minutes at a time but it's better than nothing...

ya, forgot to mention use a soft bristle brush or keep one around for attacks

also you get much more reliefe from ointments that numb as well as produce a protective film. you can then eat whatever you want as far as spice and acidity (still no really 'sharp' foods like chips)

Shouldn't you be using a soft bristle anyway? My dentist always told me to skip the hard stuff and brush gently with a soft bristle if ya don't wanna make yer gums recede.

Probably a good idea but I attribute my pearly whites to my vigorous (usually only nightly :o ) brushing with a hard bristle. Only ever had 3 cavities (no other work) and those were done 10 years ago.

/off topic.

I remember reading somewhere that excess vitamin C can cause canker sores...dunno if it's true though. It would explain my cases though considering I drink juice like it's going out of style.

Warm water with heaps of sea salt is the best! Gargle with this as often as you can. It really helps.

Agreed. I find that I get canker sores when I eat something that messes the pH up in my mouth. My mouth gets irritated, and then in come the sores. Gargling with salt water helps to wash all the nasty gunk out, and is closer in pH to saliva than fresh water.

I've got fangs and sometimes I bite inside my lip. I usually put bits of rock salt directly on them. It's excruciating for awhile, but usually gets it done.

If you're not vegan or anything, honey works pretty good as well.

I forgot about that, I bit the inside of my mouth all the time too and canker sores usually result. I'll have to try the salt thing, I'm willing to endure temporary excrutiating pain if it'll help me avoid 2 weeks of having to put up with a canker sore...

lol@fangs :D ;)
saltwater is really your best friend....when I was doing drugs in the past I would frequently have a sore mouth (sore tongue, canker sores, etc.)
Gargling with extremely salty warm water can be excruciating at first, but is a huge relief after a while. :)

I've gotten them before too but not as bad as some others in this thread.

I've noticed that I get them after a night of partying when I drink a lot of beer/liquor, and I'm sure that beer probably isn't that good for canker sores with all of the acidity in it.

I also once smoked a cigar and I got one the next day for some reason? :\

I've also used listerine mixed with hydrogen peroxide, and warm salt water rinses.

I also bought some stuff over the counter called oragel and that helped too.

i totally feel your pain... awful, just awful.

i try to stay away from super acidic foods like pineapple too many sour sweets, because usually that will do it for me... i've had them ever since i was a little girl and they are just terrible. when i had to get my wisdom teeth out i had like 5 in my mouth at once because of an infection and i was so miserable i couldn't even tolerate myself... i'll usually put seasalt right onto them even though it burns so bad it works.. theres this stuff called fletchers sore mouth medicine and it works extremely well it also hurts but if its sold in your area you should defiantly pick some up, its been around forever and really actually works within about 3 days.

canker sores are really a bitch. I get them several times a year. and i found certain numbing medications to be the best to stop the pain. each time i swab the stuff on, it relieves pain for a good 30-1hr.

Lidocaine/benzocaine topical cream. I've had canker sores that make the whole side of my face sore and just by numbing the area it relieves all the pain. I don't know what I'd do without those creams! No other suggestion will come anywhere near the effectiveness.

Jam, I don't know about Thailand, but are the chemists as liberal as most other Asian countries?

If so, then try and track down some triamcinolone cream, its a corticoidsteroid that would normally require a prescription in a western country. Safe as shit though, rub a little on the ulcer 2-3 times a day on a dried area. Being a steroid its not ideal to live on it, but if they don't heal after a couple of days better get them checked.

Every time I or anyone in my immediate family eat peanuts or any food containing peanuts (or any nuts) we get canker sores the next day . I know peanuts are known for causing allergies/reactions - I wonder if the Thai food you're eating contains peanuts? It may be worth considering - just thought I'd mention it.
