Can you take a reversible MAOI (Moclobemide) if you take melatonin at night?

Hi, I don't see why you shouldn't ;)

But then, maybe you should repost your question to ADD ;)

Hmmm, interesting question! Melatonin is a monoamine neurotransmitter structurally similar to serotonin, so I would have thought that a MAOI could prevent it being broken down - prolonging the duration - but that's not the same thing as a drug which causes increased serotonin release + MAOI leading to uncontrolled high levels in the brain. Plus I don't know if prolonged or increased exposure to melatonin is especially dangerous - I can't imagine so, not like high serotonin levels. Might fuck up your circadian rhythms and make you very drowsy the next day however.

So - from my (very limited) neuropharmacological knowledge it doesn't sound dangerous, but as I don't know and this is pure speculation, I would avoid it.

My usual interation checker doesn't list both drugs. This one says no interactions, but that doesn't mean it is definitely safe..

I'd have to agree with effie here, again from someone who isn't a pro at neuropharmacology.

I'd say at most if the MAOI is still affecting your system at night the most you'd get, if anything, would be an increase in the duration of effects of the melatonin, which are weak already.
Taking large doses of melatonin doesn't really hurt you; not that its recommended. So I can't see these two drugs really being harmful together. I'd honestly guess at there being no interaction... or no noticeable interaction.

I really think there's no serotonin syndrome like effects to be worried about but perhaps someone more knowledgeable can chime in.
