Can you do downers after psychosis?

Open-minded how? I mean I try to be, just curious about which part of my post you were referring to.

About the part where you openly and, imho, legitimately suggested that alcohol and opiates can be used for their sedating/calming effect in the aftermath of a psychosis. Many people would sneer at someone daring to suggest the use of intoxicants to recoup from a traumatic experience such as psychotic episode, not realizing that even the antipsychotics that such people often advocate in such circumstances are potent intoxicants in their own way. The possibility of having to deal with sanctimonious NA types in such a context did not stop you from speaking your mind, which is the reason why I called it "open".

Yeah occasional benzos but alcohol is a really bad idea. It can trigger psychosis on its own, it has indirect action on dopamine. It's not common but if you're sensitive to it, it can definitely be a trigger. I have snapped a few times on alcohol and I'm generally pretty together and can even handle some dopamine agonist drugs like mephedrone without snapping.

See what I mean rHun? =D

@MagickalKat777 Not calling you a sanctimonious type, but the context is just so dang funny when you read the whole thread. ;)

I'm no doctor but I would think downers like benzos and opiates, taken in moderation, could help alleviate some of the symptoms of psychosis.I've seen these drugs help a couple of friends who had psychosis (not drug induced).Hallucinogens seemed to exacerbate the symptoms.

Ah, gotcha. While alcohol has its own set of problems (especially for an alcoholic) I think stimulant psychosis is entirely different and sleep deprivation and excessive use are big factors, as well as predisposition to mental illness. Small amounts of alcohol shouldn't be an issue.

I'm actually a recovering addict and in AA, haha. But I'm not going to preach an abstinence only program to someone who isn't ready or has no interest in it. I 100% support BL's commitment to harm reduction, primarily because it aligns with my own beliefs.

okay that helped alot guys now i know i can do benzos thanks , but what about opiates anyone know which ones are safe ads which arent? like for example codeine(not sure if opiate) and oxy

Oxycodone can have a stimulating effect on some people, so while it probably won't trigger psychosis you may want to avoid it in case it brings up memories of prior bad experiences. Other opiates tend to be more sedating. Maybe try poppy seed tea? Should be pretty mild if you use the seeds, not the pods.

But again, I'm going to stress that the substances I've mentioned as most likely being okay need to be used in moderation, not over consumed or abused.

And it's always well advised to check with your doctor or another healthcare professional.

The safety aspect of the opiate lies in your tolerance level , what ELSE is in it (apap aka Tylenol which can be easily extracted for health benefits/purity ) the strength of the opiate and how often you use it. That's the basics. A tiny amount of pure heroine is technically safer than eating a shit ton of Vicodin simply because of its purity. You're gonna have to do some experimenting and if you're gonna do it, start slow and small doses . I wasn't telling you to try heroine over Vicodin! I was just using that as an example because it's a complicated question to answer. As most people on this site know... it's subjective. Opiates give me energy and make me feel great. They make my mom pass out on the couch and she hates em. My aunt took Oxycontin and had breathing problems. It all depends on you. LOW doses to start!!! Also, you might get really anxious if you try opiates and they kick in hard . That doesn't mean you're going crazy or dying.

Oh and I'd like you to know, if you plan on mixing ... please don't do that until your fully aware of your tolerance , have used the drugs before individually, and know for sure what the contraindications may be .
