I know how to germinate seeds obviously, but I was just wondering is it possible for a seed to grow without being germinated before hand? I thought it was possible but rare. Can someone let me know if I'm correct or not please.

In short....yes. If they are quality seeds don't even take a chance with not germinating. If you are just doing a mass spreading of bag seed go ahead. usually 25-50% Make it IME. I think that the soil putting pressure on the shell that it is trying to shed is what makes the difference.

if they are quality seeds, then you can skip germination altogether. (i assume you mean sprouting the seeds in a wet paper towel or dish of water)

when i first grew, i used random bagseed, and had little success. i then switched to seedbank quality seeds, and i never had a problem. (btw i never pre germinated. i would plant directly into soil)

soil is the best medium for germination. planting the seeds directly in soil also ensures that you do not shock the seedling if and when transplanting.

so really it depends. if the seeds are good, i would say yes, non germinated seeds will grow.

bagseed is another story.

My old dealer would take his left over seeds and toss them over the balcony. Every spring there would be about 10-20 little sprouts poping up till the lawn service mowed them down. So 10-20 out of a couple thousand but that wasn't planting either. I guess that would mean yes it is possible for non-germinated seeds to sprout.

I am confused. I thought germination meant the process of a seed beginning to grow. By definition then, every plant that is grown from a seed (not vegetatively reproduced) is germinated.

just stick the seed in the soil and it will grow. thats what seeds do..IMO gernminating seeds in paper towels is just a waste of time.

lol
"gernminating seeds in paper towels is just a waste of time."

^ now that is funny.

If you want any kind of quality product, you will germinate your seeds, vegetate your seeds, get some nice soil and nutrients (preferably nothing to do with Miracle Grow), and you'll take care of your plants, then you'll harvest them, and, cure them with care.. your final product will be amazing.

If you are solely wanting to know if a seed with grow without germination, I am sure it is possible, but you are adding extra stress to the plant's grow cycle and will in turn, not have a good yield or product. If you are interested in learning how to grow properly, hop over to rollitup.org, shepj sent ya :-D

Thanks every for the feedback. I was asking because I have a plethora of saved up seeds, and was wondering if just planting them would work - but it doesn't matter I'm germinating them now and they will be planted this week meaning Charlie my plants will make it! I know it's late in the season a little for out door growing but fucking my plants just got eaten by deer so I'm pretty mad.

"Seeds have a natural ability to right themselves according to gravity when planted in dirt....but sprouts do not, they are past that stage by the time you plant them. That "tail" is the root tip and should be planted pointing down. The whole placement issue can be avoided by soaking yer seeds in water for 12-24 hours, then planting directly in dirt...they will crack, orient themselves to gravity, and sprout through the dirt. But if ya sprout em first, make sure to put em tail-down when planting."

I always have used the water technique you described... I would fill a shot glass with filtered water, room temp, plop 10 or so seeds in there and come back to check 20 hours later if they all had cracked, I would plant them, if not wait another 10 hours and check, then repeat until all have cracked, but they usually crack within 24.

That's what I do as well except I just use a regular old drinking glass. I used to do the whole paper towel thing years ago but I find it to be more of a hassle. Just leaving the seeds in a glass of water for a day or two works fine :D

I still use the paper towel method, I simply get a tupperware container lid that indents when flipped upside down and lay a wet paper towel down, then my seeds (usually 15-20 at a time), and then I place another wet paper towel over top of the seeds and gently flatten the top paper towel over the seeds that way they are getting water 360 degrees around and I then put this into a big zip lock baggy and put it in the drawer and wait 24 hours or so, sometimes a little longer for stubborn seeds.

I know I make it more complicated then it has to be, but I like my method, its always worked for me and I stick to it. To each their own though.

just put the seeds in your preffered growing medium. SWIM has never had any problems growing this way

i agree.. never had a problem with yields and see no reason why a plant would be "stressed" in doing something it is naturally supposed to do like grow in soil. now in categories like nutrients, topping, and transplanting, i can see the problems with stressing the plants.

blaming the yield on how the plant was sprouted is a fucking joke. so much happens between sprout and harvest, that human influence determines yield. and swim is for fucking faggots.
