Can benzos expire?

I have ativan which expired last year. Does this stuff really lose its effect or do pharmacy companies
simply put on an expiration date because they have to or because they want people to buy fresh drugs?

I certainly will not throw benzos away this would be a sin. But if they lost their effect it would be really sad.

if they are stored properly 99% sure it wont have an loss of effectiveness or potency
worst case is that they do shit then yeah throw them away

i have a bottle of ativan getting close to 2 years old and they are still effective that or the potency loss is to small for me to notice
