I've recently taken and excelled at biochem and a year of organic in college, and I'm interested in learning more about organic synthesis. I'm looking for something that emphasizes the theory of synthesis, the general underpinnings that guide synthetic decisions, with some specific examples thrown in for illustration.

I'm also interested in medicinal chemistry, learning about how the structure of a molecule translates into and determines physiological effects.

I'm not a novice, but I don't want anything ridiculously advanced either. I'd appreciate any book recommendations or any other useful information you might have. Thanks a lot for your help.

Do you have Vogel's? As far as medicinal chemistry, if you've had a year of organic and biochem, you should like the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.

I'd suggest Organic Chemistry by McMurry, and if that goes well, about half way through I'd look at A Guidebook to Mechanism in Organic Chemistry by Peter Sykes.

Although I found backup e-books of of these text, I've still managed to wear out the hard copies.

Vogels is great, particularly if you're intending to do practical Org Chem.

Hard work, theres no substitute for this one! My personal recommendation:

If you read enough books all you will eventually find is that some of the important themes are repeated over and over. You keep reinforcing areas of strength whilst gradually filtering away the weaknesses. Learning can be a magical experience but chemistry is largely a practical subject. Dont believe everything you read.

I'll throw in a word for Organic Chemistry by McMurry too. I haven't looked many others... But that's because I haven't had to :)
