Can anxiety act as a self-correcting mechanism for addiction?

This probably won't apply to benzos or alcohol, but pretty much every other drug can cause symptoms of anxiety, DP/DR, mental fatigue, depression and just a shitty hangover when abused.

I've found that even opiates cause this, which makes dependence impossible. After all, how does one become dependent on something that starts to scare the shit out of them after a certain threshold?

Do you think there's any merit to this? Can anxiety correct for addiction?

You'd have to have some pretty insane anxiety if it was actually worsened by opiates. I've always found them extremely anxiolytic, although not quite on par with benzos.

I think you're overthinking it a little. If somebody has a condition like anxiety, then they should avoid drugs that exacerbate it, it's like any medical problem.

I know what you're saying.. I can't do opiates anymore because even just using once in a while now is enough to make me depressed and anxious for a couple days after. I think depression and anxiety as a result of drug use are kind of like a warning lights on the dashboard of your consciousness.. it means im doing something I shouldn't be and I gotta knock it off

i get it from meth, weed and def shrooms.
still doesn't stop me from getting on the meth.
im shit scared of GHB atm due to some medical issues which i think were caused by G, so that alone has put me off anything other than some codeine and xanax (separately and prescribed) - not even alcohol or coffee lol

Oh man, I thought I was the only one with respect to opiates. Yes! Anxiety helps keep my use in check. There's no question about it. I have gotten panic attacks from oxycodone

Meth use to give terrible terrible anxiety after the first initial high wore off. I would constantly need to be smokin a cig or a bowl to keep calm. But meth doesnt do that anymore. Almost no anxiety what so ever. Since that started i have been using every weekend for a few months. So ya anxiety can really help wit addiction i think. Im not addicted to meth but i crave it sometimes which use to never happen

Opiates causing depression and anxiety? Not for me. In fact it cures my anxiety and depression to a great degree. On the other hand, methamphetamine causes great anxiety & paranoia yet I still became addicted to it and I already suffer massive amount of anxiety without it. So I don't know I used to do it. Yet with amphetamines my anxiety doesn't worsen by much but still has the potential, in fact high doses can cause really bad paranoia yet I take them every day.

This certainly applies to amphetamines, other strong stimulants, and alcohol, perhaps nicotine as well, although I have no experience there.

At least in my personal experience, it doesn't apply to opiates, but that doesn't mean that's how it is for everybody, that's for sure.

I also get really bad sleep paralysis and wake up in a panic with my heart racing if I take even a little more opiate than normal. This also helps my auto-correct.
