Can a doctor void a script you've filled and change it?

In my experience a.pharmacist can refuse to fill a script good reason or not. If a pharmacist isn't comfortable filling a script then they don't have to regardless of what the doc says. It depends a lot on the pharmacist themselves. Some are very anal and some more understanding/liberal. I have had dose ups/changes on the same medication and sometimes the insurance will interfere saying you're only covered for x amount of said medication per month in which case cash would be required. I've also had a pharmacist mot ne willing to fill until I run out of my old dosage regardless of the fact that the doctor wants me to start the new dose right away.

The DEA has cracked down so hard that some of these pharmacies are afraid to do anything that con be considered even remotely sideways for fear of losing their ability to dispense controlled meds. My wife and I recently had our meds stolen (for real, no bs) and the doctor wrote is a new script and our regular pharmacy refused to fill our script even though we had all the proper documentation to prove meds were taken and they were even given am opportunity to talk to the detective handling the case. Still wouldn't budge. In their defense they have been a good pharmacy thus far but since they got a couple of nasty visits from the DEA recently they are afraid to do anything out of the norm.

Good luck and hope you cam get the help you need. DEA restrictions and increasing abuse make it hard for is the legit patients to get our meds.

Wow that's just terrible!! I wish things didn't have to be so hard. People who abuse meds or don't have pain don't realize the little things in life pain prevents that can cause major depression and despair. I'm mostly frustrated because I was doing pretty good this past month and then bam everything hit the fan with my lymes disease and pain levels. Lymes disease undiagnosed can cause huge problems. I now have a heart murmur and was in school to become a medical assistant. This is now my 4th medical leave. I actually just started to cry from my pain I just felt so lost and angry. It's nice to come on here and talk to people who can help and understand. I need my doctor to understand and help!! I wouldn't care if I had to pay cash or something just to get relief. Please everyone keep me in your thoughts or prayers that I can get the help I need.

Sometimes a code needs to be put in the computer or the insurance needs to update something on their end. It is routine so your pharmacist will know what to do.

In my country it is called a NAPPI CODE.
In the US I think they use the following http://www.hcp.essure-us.com/orderingandreimbursement/coding/

but I am only familiar with the "nappi code" system so the link above might not be the US version.

It's basically a bar coding of all medication and medical equipment for Medical Aid purposes as well as Legislation records.
It can be frustrating especially when new packaging is introduced without the correct "nappi code" or actual bar code for that matter.
Med Aid or Med Insurance insist on these codes to correspond with their various options and when we can't locate the "nappi code" the Insurance company won't process the prescription ( it's all computerized for them u see, so that they can have an automated system for profitability at the cost of the patient ), so the only way to process these prescriptions ( eg. scripts where the nappi code is obsolete or incorrect ), without having the patient having to wait for his/her insurance company to respond to a simple transaction would be to purchase the medication and the patient then would have to submit a claim from their insurance company in their own time.

But at the end of the day, the patient receives their medication, they pay for it, and the transaction is done very quickly as any cash/credit card transaction would be in a retail store.

The minute you bring the Medical Aid Schemes ( Health Insurance ) into the equation the whole process goes "pear shaped" - as with any insurance company, medical or not.
They don't like paying out.
And it doesn't only effect the patient, the pharmacy won't see a cent for months either,
We supply the patient and pay wholesalers, but have an endless battle with Medical Aids ( just think of vehicle insurance and the hoops one has to jump through to get a pay out ), the whole pharmaceutical industry is exactly the same if not worse.

So IMO the whole "nappi coding" issue is a waste of time for us, but profitable for the Insurance companies and we can't "fart against thunder" if you know what I mean.

Getting to the point of this post, over here if the prescription is processed with all the correct details and paid for by the patient it is as fast as any purchase at any retail store and at least the patient can leave with their medication.
If they insist of processing it through their medical scheme and there is a complication (as per your previous posts), then they are at the mercy of the insurance company and would have to wait for confirmation which could take days.

As I said, I have no idea how it works in other countries, ( well in Mexico you don't need a script for almost anything, u can get it OTC, but I digress - sorry), getting back to the US and the issue at hand, I thought I would share this info, who knows, it might be of help to you or it might be a complete waste of time, I wouldn't know.

At the very least you got to read a little of how things work on the other side of the Globe and maybe it might make you feel like you are not alone in your quest to get the best treatment you need and deserve.

If you have any other queries please feel free to ask.

Om truly sorry to hear about your predicament. Feel free to PM me with any questions or advise.

No, shreddedlettuce. It is a specific thing related only to claim processing and not the actual medical coding.

Lol, I'm getting old, took me an hour to edit my post, I wrote a thesis that you managed to put into one sentence............oh well, it's been a long week at work and I feel much better now after venting my frustration in the edited post for the world to read.

I am interested in how things work over there and appreciate your input.
So if there is anything in my looooooooong post that you can shed light on I would appreciate the knowledge.

Thx again.

Thank you everyone for the advice/support. Please pray for me that I can get through this pain and that my doctor will be able to fix the situation

Please pray for me

hey everyone so I have another thread here with my background info but basically I need my doctor to increase my dosage of pain medication and I'm worried he wont. I am suffering badly. Please pray for me and keep me in your thoughts that he helps me and increases my dosage to what it was. I don't have an appointment since I just had one where he lowered the dosage so I will be speaking to him over the phone. Thanks everyone

Brooki <3

Thank you Kittycat5. my boyfriend seems to think my PM doc wont want to change it but he cant just leave me to suffer like this. we were trying to taper me down but my body wasn't ready. something needs to be done. I am very soft spoken so I hope I can make my point that I'm have no quality of life and can't do activities and even when laying down am hurting and cant sleep. I don't know what I'll say to my doc if he says no I wont write you a new script.

This isnt really the best advice, but you could take 1&1/2 tabs of the 5mg if you really need it. Be aware of how much acetaminophen you are taking and know you will run out early, but you usually can fill a script 2-3 days early (not universal, some pharmacists will be more strict) even on controls. If you do this for the next two days, at least you can get by till Tues. Utilize other therapies (NSAIDs, heat, ice, stretching etc) and maybe you can tough it out.

Thank you for the suggestions I do all that and more. I use magnesium lotion, Epsom salt baths avocados are very anti inflammatory. sry I'm confused why do you say I will get by until Tuesday? what's happening Tuesday?

Nothing. If you use 1&1/2 tabs twice a day for two days, you will have the relief of 7.5mg hydrocodone until then. Gives you a couple of days of functionality is all I was saying.

My bad, you use it four times a day, well that makes it harder as far as running out earlier.

It will work out in the end.
The odds are stacked heavily in your favour and don't deserve the "ungst" you are going through right now.
You have limited meds when you need them the most more than you did when on the other medication combination.
Stopped taking the A/bc's and tried to just go with the hydro.
Harder than you thought huh?

OK

Now you have a doctor who knows your condition and verify what has been prescribed,
Your worrying about not getting treatment for the change in pain isn't necessary at all.
Your doctor will have no problem treating you, just call him and go see him if and when you need to.

That's a very quick message I wanted to get to you and sorry if it sounds like I am simplifying things, I am not, I just wanted you to read this post ASAP and feel better about all your options.

Take it easy and just knowing you have these options I hope your worrying is tonned down even just a little bit.

I hope all is well. Our Pain Management options in this country have been gutted by the DEA due to corruption in the medical practice. Who suffers? Not the doctors, they have already made their money, and the fines are nowhere close to even 1/6 of what they made while prescribing...most of these doctors lost their licenses....which they can reapply for.

So who suffers? the patient yet again.

Thanks shred lettuce for the kind and comforting words. Probably going to call him today. Just woke up a little while ago and I am sick to my stomach from the pain. I'm just afraid my doctor thinks all I care about is a higher dose. I could sense sometimes this judgment from him. Not true at all I just need to be able to function and not want to go the the ER. I'm also starting my iv antibiotics again which will make the pain worse than it is now. All I can do is stop worrying and call him I guess.

I would order some kratom to keep on hand. It does wonder for general pain for me. I am a recovering opiate addict and I don't find it euphoric, but it does ease the pain in my knee and ankle pretty well. That way you can have something on hand in case you run short.

Hopefully the treatment works and you can live a life that isn't marked by an increase in pain.

Thank you Manboychef. I'm not sure what kratom is I will google it. I haven't called the doctor yet. I know I need to be assertive and say something needs to be done for me now.
