My mother in law has pancreatic cancer. Right now she is so impacted they may have to operate. In the meantime they have her on a regimen of meds hoping to avoid that. Are there any tips/tricks to get things 'moving'? It's too far up for digital removal. And you can imagine the pain.

Hi, I'm really not qualified to give medical advice. This can be tricky since your mother in law has cancer. Since today is Friday, I would hate to see her suffering through the weekend. Can you phone her doctor and ask what can she use?

I recall needing to use a drink called magnesium citrate the day before getting a colonoscopy. But that might not be the right thing for her. We do have a GP who posts here and here's his thread:

Hey KV...No doctor or nurse, but PhD in constipation (pain has debilitated)

A few things...

Warm enema w/some lubricant in solution/Massage abdomen gently during. It may take several attempts. Assume a muslim prayer position.

If she's not throwing up, Magnesium Citrate liquid. I'm given this along with Dulcolax pills when I'm blocked. I also take larger doses for colon prep. It's citrus flavored. Pour over crushed ice and sip 1/2 a bottle. My nurse saved my life with this cocktail in the hospital.

Miralax I don't think would help, because it takes a while at start-up.

Can she swallow LINZESS? It's capsule prescription. It works like Miralax, drawing water into hard, dry stool. It's a miracle, too.

Bless her sweet heart. I know this misery (sans PC) as only those who have experienced it. Oh, I weep for her pain.

PLEASE ASK for LINZESS or one of the other new meds for OIC.
