I have not met one exchange student in my Uni years that did not like Sydney. Hope you're here for summer, that is the best time of year - esp for going to the beaches. And you could travel up the coast to Byron Bay (like most of the visitors that come do). QLD is beautiful also; Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, all along the Great Barrier Reef...if you haven't tried SCUBA diving this is a good place to try it - amazing sport and beautiful experience.
