It sounds like at least AJ has played around with Mecke reagent a bit...
I was recently discussing a pill with someone which gave a brown Mecke reaction, no Marquis test unfortunately. I determined that the reagent was working correctly, and hopefully can get the pill sent for testing. In the meantime.... nothing listed in the NIJ document which turns brown of any shade is very likely to be found in a US "ecstasy" pill. Have you found anything more common which might do so? I'm thinking maybe it was DXM + somthing else which made the color dirty. On the same topic, any other Mecke color rxn's you've determined outside of what's on the NIJ chart would be most appreciated.
peace,
Mike

was your mecke still OK? clear liquid? Maybe the sulphuric already oxidized and that's the strange color...

The other person was the tester, not I. Her question was whether her Mecke may have gone bad, just as you suggested. I had her test her Mecke w/ sugar and it seems to be ok, nice bright yellow rxn. Also, her reagent is only a few months old. My own Mecke is still working correctly, so I'm not sure what they do once they go bad, do you?
