Brown Amanita Muscaria?

I recently bought an ounce of amanita muscaria from a source that has always delivered quality, brilliant red caps.

This order contained about 1/2 of the red caps. The other half is comprised of brown caps (they look the same as the other ones, just a medium-brown color). Should the brown amanita be avoided? If so, why?

be very careful here, i suggest you do some research on the 'panther cap' or amanita pantherina

i think the color of the caps can change at different times of the year, but i'm not entirely sure. therefore, have these checked by an experienced person who knows mushrooms. some of the most deadly mushrooms are in the same family as a.muscaria, so you REALLY want to be sure here.

The red's provided a great a. muscaria trip. Maybe the brown should be tossed. Idk. I do have a book on mycology...not with me though. I'll see what that has.

Here's a pic of what I have left:

The one on the bottom is slightly brownish red.

Could there be other problems with the other two (mold, etc.?).

I have seen brown amanitas in SW new hampshire forests. I am not qualified enough to say what sub species they are but they were definitely amanitas and brown. edit: I have seen them growing wild, not for sale in a headshop

They grow everywhere here and range from bright red, to orange, to brown. When dried they tend to get browner - just checked mine from last year and they look much the same as yours.

*** But if in any doubt, chuck 'em out is the Golden Rule as with any mushrooms ***
Do they look like this: http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl...a=X&ei=6pi0TPjtKcG78gbKt-nnAg&ved=0CBsQ9QEwAQ

if so toss em away, those are patheras and they will make u sick and could kill you.

Only if you OD same as anything else. You can buy them online or even in highstreet headshops in the UK and nobody has died so far. They're just a bit stronger than A. Muscaria but not by a lot, in my experience.

PS: They are also very tasty mushrooms - the Japanese use them in cookery - and they make a rather scrummy tea even at sub-psychedelic doses :)

The ones I ordered look the same as that. I assume it's perfectly fine since they look the same as how they advertised them.

trusting your vendor is important if you're to buy amanitas

having said that

they look muscaria alright

about the pantherinas

they're they same with muscarias, only x2 ~ x6 times stronger

so yeah

they could be dangerous if mistaken with edibles or muscarias
