British backpacker Cheznye Emmons, 23, dies from spiked alcohol in Indonesia

METHANOL-SPIKED alcohol has claimed another young life in Indonesia with the death of a British backpacker.

Cheznye Emmons, from Great Wakering, Essex, was travelling through Indonesia with her boyfriend Joe Cook, 21, when she started feeling ill after drinking from a bottle marked as gin from a local shop.

The 23-year-old started feeling ill and within days she complained that she was unable to see. She had to travel for hours through the jungle before being transferred to Medan, Sumatra where she was placed in an induced coma.

Her parents, Pamela and Brenton made the decision to turn off her life support on April 25.

It follows a spate of cases where people have become sick or even died from drinking alcohol laced with methanol.

In December an Australian schoolgirl was blinded after drinking a tainted cocktail while on a trip to Bali.

Then in February 19 year-old Liam Davies from Perth died after drinking a vodka mixer which was laced with methanol in Lombok.

High taxes have pushed up the price of alcohol and some are trying to stretch the alcohol as far as they can with a local spirit called arak. Others are taking it further and adding methanol to other spirits.

The British embassy in Indonesia and the local police are investigating Ms Emmons' death.

Man that sucks they should distill it like hillbillies it's not hard to get out methonal in a backwoods set up. Then they can just add a little to their stock to thicken it up in a natural way. I know it's not as easy as adding random chemicals but people won't die

People are dying everyday from alcohol and all the authorities say is "we need to educate the public".

Indonesia faces booze sale ban after hardline court win

SALES and distribution of alcohol could be banned in some parts of Indonesia after Muslim hardliners won a Supreme Court victory, an official said Friday.

While it is the world's most populous Muslim-majority country, the sale of alcohol for the small number who drink and tourists has until now been allowed.

Some local authorities, where Islamic hardliners are influential, introduced bylaws banning the sale and distribution of alcohol.

But these could never be enforced due to a 1997 presidential decree prohibiting local governments taking it upon themselves to ban the sale of alcohol.

Now a prominent hardline group, the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), has succeeded in getting the decree overturned in a judicial review at the Supreme Court, a spokesman for the court said.

Spokesman Ridwan Mansyur told AFP: "The Supreme Court has accepted the judicial review filed by the FPI ... as the presidential decree ... failed to bring peace and public order to Indonesian communities."

The court issued the ruling in mid-June but it was only made public in recent days.

The FPI, notorious for conducting raids on "sinful" bars and nightclubs, hailed the victory, which will allow local authorities to enforce the bylaws.

"All Indonesian Muslims are overjoyed," said the head of the FPI's Jakarta branch, Salim Alatas.

"The ruling has saved generations from the negative impact of alcohol."

Reydonnizar Moenek, a senior interior ministry official, said a number of local authorities had issued the bylaws although he did not know how many.

The Jakarta Post newspaper reported that 22 regencies and municipalities, including several in and around the capital Jakarta, had issued the bans.

If you banned alcohol his would happen alot more. If you legalized mdma people would stop dying from contaminated pills.

Is alcohol banned in many places in the world? Looks like not all of Indo will be banned from what I can gather anyway, so it's not like you wont be able to head over to some other area and buy it. I can't see how they will enforce it in the tourist districts, the places would lose so much money from loss of tourism and loss of drunk young ins.

^^ indeed, the only thing worse than a ban on alcohol is a partial, piecemeal, patchwork ban on alcohol. If it is banned totally across a country, then sure, people will smuggle it in and may try to stretch it out with toxic shit like methanol or isopropanol. But if the ban is only applicable in some places and not others, it makes it much, much easier for smugglers / organized crime figures to get ahold of, while still encouraging people to dilute or 'stretch' it out with other alcohols.

Indonesia is an extremely strict Islamic country. My brother has lived there for over 8 yrs and says that the majority of the country is alcohol free/dry any way. The major cities and tourist regions like Bali wouldn't be affected and the rest of the country wouldn't know a difference. Alcohol just isn't ingrained in the culture.
