does anyone know about the kind of security practiced by u.s. trans-continental major train companies? a friend of mine is planning a trip soon and was wondering if it'd be safe to take along a few mushrooms on a trip from the west to the east coast

i've never encountered any security whatsoever travelling by train, even on long trips (like 8 hours). this was in canada, but a few of the routes sometimes are serviced by Amtrak trains (and i'm pretty sure that Amtrak is the only US passenger train service).
they never did anything more than ask for my ticket -- except once, on an Amtrak train where they asked me if i understood how to use the emergency exit window, and told me to move to another seat if i didn't think i could handle the responsibility of sitting next to it.
oh, and the amtrak trains have food on them. food and alcohol.
but no smoking. keep this in mind. no smoking. pain.
however, all this was before sept. 11. they may have increased security since then.

Thus far I don't think they have really increased security on trains, well, I am sure they have some how.. but it's not as major as what they are doing in the airports, so you shouldn't have a problem smuggling small amounts of dope on board ..
Of course if you're Arab* then forget it, because you will be strip searched if you so much as get onto a city bus@!
*Nothing against Arabs, it's just that most of them are terrorists and if we don't kill them first they will hi-jack commuter airplanes and crash them into our buildings!..

Arabs\Asians, its all the same to some fuckwits...
oh and when it comes to smuggling small amounts of dope, your cool - what cood they do on interstate trains? there will probably be guys with bags packed with Kz who have real cause to be slightly concerned.
but im in Europe, not America.

I'll vouch that as far as putting a little something or other in a bag, you should have zero problems with taking it on a train in a book bag or suitcase or whatever. I wouldn't go smuggling pounds of anything, but as long as you can keep it hidden in the bag, maybe inside a shirt or something, even a substantial quantity should be fine. I've never heard of anyone having their bags checked out on a train. It probably happens, but is probably rare. So far the heightened security at train stations = a few morons with m-16s walking around. Nothing more.
Excersise some caution and common sense, but don't stress it.

if you're takin a long Amtrak route..i wouldn't bring a sustantial amount of dog-detectable drugs with you...I went from chicago to CA and a team of dogs went through the entire train....then again I brought a 1/8th of weed with me..but it was smoked before the dogs came in .....you'd think they would've smelled it on me...but maybe they were "fake" dogs..hahahaha

Either way there's no doubt in my mind they were ALL ass sniffing dogs.

i ride the train every weekend from NJ to NYC---I've never seen anything ON the train having to do with security, but in Penn Station, they've got National Guard, and I *have* seen dogs there on two occassions. I've never taken a long inter-state train ride...but like others said, as long as you have small amounts, I wouldnt see too much trouble with it--jus dont try transporting all of colombia's finest.

I've travelled from NYC to Philadelphia and back to NYC on Amtrak with a backpack and the only time any crewmember ever spoke or even looked at me was to take my ticket. I was dressed kind of "raver-ish," too...not fully out bracelets up to my ears or anything, but I had on big pants and a sleater-kinney tshirt (the only reason I remember these details is because I have a photograph of me on the train). This was several years ago though.
