Breathalyzer Tests Now The Law At N.J. High School
Pequannock Ratchets Up Alcohol Zero-Tolerance Policy
January 4, 2007

PEQUANNOCK TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBS) ― When it comes to keeping our teenagers safe and sober, one New Jersey school district is taking the lead by employing the use of a Breathalyzer test.

And as CBS 2 HD found out, it's become such a successful deterrent, students are passing with flying colors.

Keeping high school students sober can be, in some situations, a full time job.

"I personally got Breathalyzed," said student Jessica Forrest.

At Pequannock High School.

Getting checked for alcohol is now the rule at dances and other social events.

"I'm all for it because if your child isn't doing anything wrong, then you have nothing to hide," parent Barbara Fede said.

Pequannock School District superintendent Dr. Larrie Reynolds said some students' recent behavior left the district no choice.

"It actually came to a head when last year at the graduation senior trip, that we had students who actually couldn't graduate as a result of their drinking," school board member Dr. Larrie Reynolds said.

Pequannock also has an active Breathalyzer test, similar to what would be used during a police traffic stop. It's a little more intrusive, but administrators believe it sends a clear message about their zero-tolerance policy on alcohol abuse.

So far it has worked, and now other districts are following Pequannock's lead.

In fact, Southington High School in Connecticut expanded the program for daily use when a student is suspected of drinking.

"In the world of high school students, any alcohol rating is a reading that is inappropriate," Superintendent Joseph Mirardi said.

Pequannock school officials say because their limited Breathalyzer use has been so effective, they aren't willing to take the program that far just yet.

"We'll leave that for somebody else to decide," Reynolds said. "We're really not going into that area."

However frequently it's used.

"I don't think people will like, drink anymore," Pequannock student Erika Vecchiet said.

It seems the Breathalyzer has at least cleared the air about who is -- and who is not -- welcome at school.

Pequannock school officials say they avoided running into any privacy issues by making students sign a contract which states they must submit to a Breathalyzer if they want to attend a school social event.

I think people will definitely like, still drink. They just won't do it before school functions, dances, etc.

like thats totally facist man. In other news techno music requests at school dances triple.

"I don't think people will like, drink anymore,"

Instead they will totally, like, do oxycontin instead.

"I'm all for it because if your child isn't doing anything wrong, then you have nothing to hide," parent Barbara Fede said.

This line of logic is why I support the abolishment of the fourth amendment.

lol! It's pretty retarded. I never, ever drank while I was in high school. Never stopped me from getting high though.

Seriously, this does very, very little to prevent people from getting altered and attending functions.

What's next? UA's for all!!

(seriously, I used to work for a company that UA'd kids in WI, along with a more intensive program, and I hated it. Mostly because my bosss was an man-hating cunt, but that's a different story).

you PERSONALLY got breathalyzed? you yourself? Really? Cuz like, if YOU got breathalyzed, it coulda been someone else if it wasnt you PERSONALLY right....

At Pequannock High School.

Who the fuck wrote this article. I aint no one to talk on spelling and grammar and etc, but in a newspaper its a lil different. at pequannock hs. getting checked. for alcohol is. now the rule at school. dances and events. is this a highschool newsletter or some shit.

Getting checked for alcohol is now the rule at dances and other social events.

Yea, you stupid cunt. I hope you wouldnt be opposed to someone with a camera outside your bedroom window watching you and broadcastin it on the web 24/7 then. Cuz you aint got nothing to hide, right? that is the stupidest mutha fuckin line of logic i ever heard. and it comes up all the time. the people that believe this shit tend to be some of the most ignorant and uninformed people, or they are total hypocrites, cuz unless you are a exhibitionist, everybody does shit that they want to keep private.

it dont matter what it is. It might be pickin their nose or jackin off. Or maybe it is just licking out a ice cream carton or some shit. Or smokin weed. whatever. I dont care, but you cant apply that kinda logic to one thing n not the other. if its OK to get monitored cuz if you aint doin nothing wrong you aint got nothing to hide, then it gotta apply to everything you do, so if you cant say youd be comfortable with that, then shut the fuck up and stop makin comments that only apply to other peoples actions and not yours, or only apply to actions you dont like that others do.

The district superintendent dr larrie reynolds said it? and said it? I dont care how you talk or how you type on a message board, but if you are writin news for a newspaper, and you cant come up with nothing beter than --- 'Doctor Dumb Cunt said, "I enjoy anal and vaginal penetration at the same time," Doctor Dumb Cunt said.' -- then you should get fired. i love how they use the superintendents quote, and then refer to her as a school board member in the NEXT sentence, like everybody forgot who she was, and now shes a totally different person that they asked. also how she actually said it actually came to a point where they actually couldnt graduate, actually.

What about when you were in highschool and the drinking age was 18? Then was it inappropriate? it was OK for you to drink when you were a 18 year old in highschool. why, cuz drinking was safer back then? cuz teenagers were more responsible? becuz liquor didnt come in such high proof? NO! Because it was legal. thats the only god damn difference.

If you have a substance or action that everyone says GREAT, COOL, AWESOME! when its legal, and then as soon as someone makes it illegal its HORRIBLE, UNACCEPTABLE! then there is some serious problems there. what is the fuckin difference!? Its the SAME EXACT THING, its just banned now. people are such dumbasses they cant even differentiate why they are against something, they just go along with whatever the hell everyone else says, cuz there must be a reason behind it right.

Pequannock school officials say because their limited Breathalyzer use has been so effective, they aren't willing to take the program that far just yet.

"We'll leave that for somebody else to decide," Reynolds said. "We're really not going into that area."
Somebody else to decide. Who the fuck else is deciding it, you ignorant ass fuckbrain? YOU THE GODDAMN SUPERINTENDENT! YOU make the rules shithead. this is the shit that I hate about this state is the schools. the state pays the highest property taxes in the country and a huge chunk of it goes to schools, and in places like pequannock (very rich n upscale) they take such pride in their precious 'great school system' and then you have shit for brains people running it like this "larrie" bitch who cant even decide what the fuck to do with her own damn school system. The state sure as fuck dont care, if anything they would more likely be against this type of thing if someone was bringing it to court,....Basically my point here is, No one is gona come in and say its a state mandated thing, so who else would they be waitin for to decide for them? the town? the federal government? jesus?

However frequently it's used.

"I don't think people will like, drink anymore," Pequannock student Erika Vecchiet said.

I aint even gonna touch that one, you stupid cunt. get the fuck out of my state before you make people think thats what were all like you jersey-misrepresenting waste of life.

It seems the Breathalyzer has at least cleared the air about who is -- and who is not -- welcome at school.
8( Who is and who aint welcome at school. THEY ARE YOUR STUDENTS. they should ALL BE WELCOME AT SCHOOL. it is THEIR SCHOOL. What the fuck are they sayin, that they dont want their own students to show up at school if they are drinkers? the way they word it, they make it sound like some kids from a neighboring district snuck into the school or some shit and now they put in a new ID system that made it clear who is and aint welcome, they shouldnt be talkin about their own students that way.

Pequannock school officials say they avoided running into any privacy issues by making students sign a contract which states they must submit to a Breathalyzer if they want to attend a school social event.

So basically they gave kids no choice and told them that to go to a event that their parents pay tax money to sponsor, they gotta give up their privacy . the parents in pequannock must be devastatingly stupid to all be OK with this. this school been at the front of the stupidity race for a long time now when it comes to drug testing and etc. I hope all their attention to teen drinking and drug use helps nurture the anger and insanity of the next school shooter and while they brag about their great accomplishments someone comes in and sprays all they dumb asses. they didnt fix shit . just created a untrusting environment that aint gonna do shit to deter anyone with more than one brain cell.

I caught that, Mr. Grim. :D

Now how do I, like, subscribe to your newsletter?

Yeah, this article is funny that it seems to think it's going to 'clean up kids' acts' but in reality, it'll force them into being criminals (ie, using drugs rather than the legal alternative: alcohol).

It's not helping anybody to back people (KIDS!) into the corner like this in the name of freedom. wtf?

If I've done nothing wrong, it isn't on me to prove that, it's on you. Therefore, get that breathalyzer out of my face until I do something that would make you suspect I've been drinking.

What utter assholes...

To the previous poster, who said that it is forcing kids to become criminals by taking drugs, hey, at least it's still (in most cases) safer!
Second, I can't stand "routine" anything. It usually means your civil liberties are about to be raped. Stupid alcohol testing...I mean, I can understand testing people who are driving and have been exhibiting suspicious behavior. And by that, I don't mean being black or having funny bumper stickers. I mean like fishtailing, or if a huge wave of beer pours out of your car when you open the door.
I hate you, state of Kentucky.

exactly. Why not drug test everyone? Why not put interlock systems on every car? It shouldn't be a problem if they have nothing to hide, right? In fact, why not search everyones house to make sure they aren't harboring terrorists, and audit everyone to make sure they are paying their taxes? It shouldn't be a problem if they have nothing to hide.

People are idiots.

The Constitution is too complicated for Amerikans to comprehend. We need to trash it and start over. It will begin with:

Article I. The right to be left alone. People who aren't bothering anybody will be assumed to not be bothering anybody and will be left alone until they start bothering someone. People who never bother anybody will always be left alone.

Well gee, if we can make that work we might not need any more Articles. :\

I always had this fear back in my less law-abiding days that I'd get raided while jerking off.

Ask the Brits what they think about being the most videotaped people in the world.

Oddly, I don't hear many complaints.

This mandatory drug testing in schools is rediculous. Let the parents decide if they want to test their kids. Not that I think parents should be testing their kids, at least not without reason. If the kid is obviously high, it is one thing. Otherwise, it is a good way to make the kid resentful and untrusting of the parents, not to mention the shame they'd feel if they were wrongfully suspected.

They also say nothing to worry about if you don't drink. What happens if you rinse your mouth with mouthwash, or have a cold and take a dose of legal alcohol containing cough syrup? With the zero-tolerance policies that sometimes get kids in trouble for aspirin and tylenol, you'd probably be screwed. They won't care if the kid has a reasonable explanation for failing.

I got in trouble at school for havin a butter knife to cut up a apple for my lunch when i was in 5th grade. the shits ridiculous. i cant wait to be the parent that all the teachers hate with a huge passion when i got kids some day. Ah ha ha h haahaha....Raisin hell will be so great. my moms already does a good job of it when shit like this comes around my lil sister, and she is so against the testing shit she never scared to make a ruckus. Thas the only thing i look forward to about this whole dumb thing is bein the wrench in the gears someday.

^ That may be true, but it isn't fair to give them a record if/when they get caught then, is it? Drugs are still illegal, kids, so in the eyes of the law those that use them are criminals...

^^^
well technically in the eyes of the law kids who drink before 21 are criminals as well so its a catch 22
