thejone's quote is a good one. He was just showing the opposite side of the spectrum. You need a work/life balance. For the person who said he could make $65k in 3 months working 10 days, yes, you are busting your ass but then you mention relaxing for the rest of the year. That is OK. Some people will do that every day 365 days a week. THAT is having no life and like the quote says, it affects your health.
I just got hired by a company, and one thing I looked for was a company that cared about its people and weren't all about "how many hours have you worked?"
The last gig I had, the MARRIED men worked more than I did. Guys with kids and a wife at home were working 60 hours a week and even working from home on the weekends. Me? The single girl with no kids was looked down on because I told them flat out I'm not doing that. I want my private life. I will work my 40 (actually I billed about 50 hours a week...sometimes 45) and I'm going home. I'm not gonna work my ass off for a company who decided to outsource their now shitty code to India to save a buck. That's on them.
My boss used to say to me "Think about all the billable hours you're missing out on." Fuck that. I made enough to live, put away some cash, and live comfortably. This was a guy who had a wife and a kid and he never saw them, because he was always at work. That's a horrible way to live IMO.
Companies have now started selling work/life balance benefits for people, and they are realizing that you can get better work out of people when they are happy instead of hounding them.
