I have a left over klonopin script from my old psychiatrist, about 2 months ago it was written, and now my new dr has switched me to a xanax dose which i get the script for in person monthly. I've had left over klonopin from before I began the xanax so I have been able to save the majority of the xanax. the question i have is, in the state of florida, will it allow me to fill my klonopin script i have from my old dr, and in roughly 2 weeks when i go to see my new dr allow me to fill the xanax script?

yeah.. if one was to have a klonopin rx for years at one pharmacy, and then have the rx changed to xanax by the dr and filled, is it illegal to get the auto-refills left on the klonopin? the xanax is at new pharmacy, strictly by coincidence. was wondering if the dr gets alerted everytime the klonopin gets refilled automatically or just when the pharmacy has to call it in to the dr. wouldn't want the dr to see that the old klonopin rx had been filled again since the new xanax rx had already been filled. anybody know how that works?? thanks-

I was in this situation before too. I had a refill left on my script for xanax from Dr. X, but that same doctor switched me to klonopin per my request cause it's longer acting. I got the new one filled and the refill on my xanax filled at the same pharmacy and explained that the Xanax was my "safety blanket" so to say...I keep it around in case I feel a panic attack coming or something like that. The klonopin is for daily use.

I don't know the laws surrounding these kinds of things in Florida, but if you fill your script after you already got Xanax from your current doctor than that would be considered almost like doctor-shopping or in some other way illegal (I know in Michigan such a thing would be illegal). But I hear they are pretty loose with all their scripts down in Florida, so you'd probably be able to get both no problem considering that they don't have a monitoring system.

OH i didn't read that they were different doctors. That's different...I dunno about that. Sorry

Does your new doctor want you to continue to take Klonopin? If so, then get the Klonopin prescription from your new psychiatrist.

Florida has a prescription drug monitoring program and it is a red flag when a patient brings in a script for a controlled substance that is a few months old--most people taking a controlled substance bring in their script to be filled the day it is written, not months later. The pharmacy would more than likely call your physician(s) to verify the script.

If you feel that you need to continue to take Klonopin, then discuss it with your current physician rather than using an old script.

I'm in Texas and the doctor hasn't changed. He just switched me to the xanax. So if I use the remaining refills for the klonopins at a different pharmacy, is he gonna find out? Only reason the xanax is at another pharmacy is because I moved....same doctor. Basically, does the doctors office get notified when you simply refill a script that's a month old (i have 3-4 refills) or do they just get notified when it's a "no-refill" situation and they have to be contacted to fill it? with the klonopins, i'd always get 6 refills to last 6 months. i'd like to get the klonopins as well but i don't want to risk the doctor finding out and getting all weird and canceling the xanax rx. thanks for all the replies!!!

I don't think you can put refills on a controlled substance.... at least not in california. I don't think you can get them on CIII or CIV. I could be wrong though. Definitely not a CII.

I "call in" to get my CII prescription started, but I have to physically walk in to my pain management clinic to pickup the Triplicate hard copy prescription paper.

^^CIII-CV can have up to 5 refills/6 months in most states.
CII substances always need a new prescription. No refills, no call ins

I was replying to the OP who is in Florida.

The pharmacy would likely call your physician.

The pharmacy would likely call your physician. Texas also has a prescription drug monitoring program so pharmacies can "talk" to one another, and it doesn't matter if you pay cash or use your insurance.

As far as I know, CII drugs cannot be refilled, CIII and CIV can be refilled up to 5 times within a 6 month period, but CV drugs don't have a refill law to it. The only thing is temazepam (CIV) requires specially coded or specially scripted prescriptions for it in some states. That's basically the US law regarding controlled drug prescribing.

I have a klonopin script from one doctor and xanax from another....I never even thought about it being illegal, but I've only done this for a few months. I don't think you can get in trouble, or at least nobody has ever said anything to me about it....

If your state has a drug monitoring system then eventually they will catch on and you will get in trouble for what they call "doctor-shopping".

I can say with assurance that the clonazapam has been a "5 refill" rx everytime for years. I just have to go to the dr every 6 months for a rx check-up and then he does the 5 refills for the next six months. there would be no shopping around for rx'sand no dr shopping. so you guys are saying that if i did refill the old rx that my dr would most likely be notified even though I had refills remaining? Sorry to be redundant...that's just basically what i really need to know. are there any pharm techs on here that know the procedure on stuff like this? Thanks again....

That's probably why I can't get refills on a CIV, temazepam and Xanax. I think California has a special code required for Xanax too. I have NEVER heard of Xanax refills.

the nurse did say that the dr never does refills on xanax but the klonopin was always set up with the refills through my dr/Walgreens...
