I have $600, a vehicle, no work today, & am extremely bored. As a polysubstance user, anything is up for game, which makes getting something too easy (as in walking across the street or a quick drive). I have some weed & 1 sleeping pill for bed. Any tips from anyone on ways to keep myself occupied & away from spending my money? I find I am pacing excessively, smoking more cigarettes (which is not good as I am on Zyban), & can't figure out what to even do besides reading the forums here. I need a hobby.

You've answered your own question there friend, you need a hobby. Exercise is an amazing distraction from anything, with the added bonus of a natural high after, I usually feel pretty content after a decent workout.
The hardest thing when feeling as unsettled as you do is without a doubt committing yourself to something, but it's one of those things you just have to do and get better at with each try.
I honestly do think exercise is the best, universal kind of hobby, but finding something you personally enjoy is much more worthwhile. There must be something you want to do, you've got $600! Go see a movie or check out a band or treat yourself to a nice dinner.

You could always give your money to me, and I could guarantee you that you would not get any drugs in return.

Really, though, recovering addicts need to get a hobby because boredom is a common reason why people pick up again.

Thanks for the suggestions. A book actually seems like a good idea. For exercise I think I'll just start off with some push ups. I just need to get used to having fun not high & such.

Perhaps you could write a book.

Freaking amazing idea. When your fresh to recovering from a substance you got all kinds of emotions running through your head and it feel great to get em out. Even if its on paper. Ive been keeping journals for around 14 years and there for sure the most interesting at my starting points of sobriety. The paper cant judge you and you can get everything out. Writting a book or keeping a journal kills so much time and takes your mind off of all the negative shit so easy.

And I like to find new places to go, Ill search the net for different nature related places around me I have been to before. Like water falls or cliffs, rock corries and ponds. Just beautiful places that I know will take my mind off everything it doesnt need to be on at that time. And it makes for good exercise.

Try joining some other non-drug-related forums. BL, though a great place, can be triggering/enabling and too much exposure to certain parts of the site (inevitable with heavy use) is going to really make one feel left out of the good highs and the PLUR. Do you have any other interests aside from drugs? There are forums for almost anything out there. Forums are also valuable in that they can help one get started in a new interest, so "hobby shopping" can be done across various forums.

As for money, I assume that you have a job and are not used to keeping this much of your paychecks. Can you lock this up in a bank account or a mutual fund, where you don't have access to it except for emergencies?

Good idea on the book, although I've always wanted to submit trip reports to erowid from my experiences. Good suggestion RedLeader, but unfortunately drugs are my hobby. Not just using them, but also anything about them. I have always managed to put rent first though along with food first. I'm a Pharmacology student who hopes to someday be a Biochemist or a Psychopharmacologist, so I always keep learning about them when I can though. I'm working next few days & have 2 jobs, so it'll keep me busy for a bit.

That's where I am. Starting off with push ups is a good idea. When I get that squiggly, anxious feeling in my gut that left a lone might give me the shits or turn into panic, I do as many pushups as I can. Sometimes that's 10, sometimes 35 or so. Poof, that feeling is greatly lessened. Then it comes back an hour later. BAM, drop and do 20! It really helps. ANY exercise is 10,000 times better than none. I love you guys!

Get involved in marketing, you can make a lot of money and its one thing I'm absolutely obsessed with (internet marketing that is).

Its also not as hard as most people think. Just a couple weeks ago I wrote an ebook and posted it on music forums, made a nice chunk of cash.
Its a lot of fun, theres about 10,000 different ways to make money online, and it can be very lucrative once you know what you're doing.

I know if I had weed I would'nt be bored. But of course everyone's different.

Smoke that weed , pop that pill and go to bed early as hell . Other than that find sober friends , get interested
In other things (experiment and u will find something) . Or even spend that money on something great that'll last ages , buy an Xbox or a ps3 or something , get into gaming , buy a weight set and some protein shakes/supplements and become a fitness freak , that's what I'm trying to do ATM , I've found 1 good sober friend who takes me out to do normal things , today we went golfing which was fun , been to a MASSIVE timezone which is heaps fun , been playing pool heaps everyday . And I've started working out and drinking protein shakes .

watch movies or documentaries, play online poker, go walk outside, go see some of you cousins, start body building, go to the library and get a wicked book to read.

I don't think there's ever an excuse to be bored unless you're in solitary confinement. Motivation is what's needed to pull yourself out of boredom i.e to get off the couch and do SOMETHING.

Dude!

I'm into the exact same thing.

I'm a copywriter though, I don't have any products of my own yet.

I make a pretty decent income working about 25 hours a week from my apartment.

I'm absolutely positive that I want to eventually create products of my own and sell them, but I'm not sure what niche to enter yet.

I really want to write about a topic I'm actually interested in, I'm thinking something like:

- Freelancing how-to.

- Post-college survival.

- Travel.

I'm really putting a lot of thought into this...

As 1394 said maybe try writing a book, or even just a poem/song. It's rather nice and stress reliving when you've come up with something that expresses how you feel in a nice clean way, and get everything of your chest.

start playing an mmorpg. You will become so immersed in that parallel universe, that you will begin to care more about the money in the game, than money in real life. Thus, keeping you occupied from spending all your real money. And hey, in the end, after you acquire a lot of video-game-dough, you could sell it for real life cash!
