SUMAS, Whatcom County — Border agents had to dig through heaps of manure to get it, but they seized nearly a ton of so-called "B.C. bud" marijuana stashed in a secret compartment of a cattle trailer at the Canadian Border Tuesday.

The semi-truck, full of beef cattle, arrived at the border on its way to Stanwood, but an X-ray device revealed inconsistencies in the trailer, according to a news release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

After unloading the cattle and shoveling through the manure, the agents found false panels in the floor and hundreds of bags of pot totaling 1,746 pounds, they said.

The truck driver, a 39-year-old British Columbia man, was arrested.

"While it is not every day we discover drugs hidden under cow flop, it does have its own unique, sweet smell of success," Area Port Director Pat Hinchey said in the release.
