books that changed your life.

In chronological order:

Tripod Trilogy by John Christopher - what really turned me onto sci-fi novels, and reading in general, in elementary school. i ended up reading every john christopher book available at the public library that year. my ex actually bought me the trilogy for x-mas a year ago, and it just got me so nostalgic when i picked them up again for the first time in like 8 years. haha, it makes me feel like such a little kid again.

Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand - made me realize what a load of selfish elitist bullshit objectivism is.

Propaganda and the Public Mind by Noam Chomsky - completely opened my eyes to systems of coercion we live in. also turned me on to the rest of his works.

Steppenwolf by Herman Hesse - i don't know why but i never read any other novel that i related to so much. this book has really been crucial in my exploration and discovery of my personal philosophy. it's totally changed the way i look at life. this book also turned me on to other works by Hesse and other austrian and german novelists including Kafka.

Censored 2003 by Peter Phillips - made me realize how important it is to seek out diversified news sources and how elliptical the reporting of mainstream media is. but most importantly it inspired me to be more politically active and to also take more interest in trying to improve my local and global community.

and more recently:
Utilitarianism by J.S. Mill, Antonio Gramsci's Prison Notebooks, and Guy DeBord's Society of the Spectacle have all been essential in shaping my worldview as well as giving me new and previously unconsidered perspectives. i don't particularly agree with all of these philosophies but they're things which i constantly think about.

Noam Chomsky-The Chomsky Reader
Stephen King-The Stand
Kurt Vonnegut-Breakfast of Champions

the art of happiness: dalai lama

i was in yr 11 going to catholic school, spinning out after a bit of trippy weekend over how crazy we all are for conforming to this crazy'ness ...

my dad brought me the book, it really is a handbook for living a postive buzzz filled life

if the vision of happiness, peace, warmth, compassion or even just a bit of a nice warm smile in the morning while the birds are chirping sounds good

...then read this book and start waking to who you really are!

Nature by Ralph Waldo Emerson.
I was going through a confusing time in my life and this essay definitely made a lightbulb turn on over my head.

The Gospels ("Saint" Paul is antichrist)

Art of Loving, Erich Fromm

Crisis of our age, Pitrim Sorokin

If you read one book, read The Biology of Transcendence by Joseph Pearce. I promise it will change your life.

If you ever wondered why history repeats itself, why so many people are unhappy, fearful, anxious, what evolution has in store for us, what our neocortical areas really do, what happened to Jesus' actual message, and what's real...READ THIS BOOK

touched

I was touched by this post and thought i would add some input on a few books that helped me to grow as a person.

Fantasy/Sci Fi
The Lord of the Rings
The Wizard of Earthsea—a personal man’s voyage to wisdom
Amber series
Katherine Kerr “Daggerspell” series—a storyline that teaches u about celtic tradition too

Misc
Celestine Prophesy
The Long Walk—I have to go off about this one a moment: one guy escapes a Russian prison camp and WALKS all the way to freedom in India. I get shivers just THINKING about it.
Memoirs of a Geisha—good story, Japanese culture, beautifully written
The Artist’s Way—claim back your creative side!!

The Illuminatus Trilogy - Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson
This one sent me scurrying for more information on Eastern religions, Freemasonry, the French Revolution, Catholicism, LSD, and Egyptian Mouth Breeders. Anything that all-inclusive should be read and re-read, over and over...

Be Here Now - Baba Ram Dass
The true story of an Ivy League professor who becomes a student of a mountain-dwelling yogi. Fascinating.

Stranger In A Strange Land - Robert Heinlein
First-rate sci-fi/fantasy novel that everyone should read at least once...I've read it like 6 times. Very large lessons for humanity in there.
