THIRTEEN people have been arrested in a drug blitz at an inner-city Brisbane nightclub precinct.

The overnight operation Walk the Line 2, involving more than 40 officers and a sniffer dog, targeted people waiting to enter nightclubs and pedestrians in the Fortitude Valley area, Police said today.

Officers seized MDMA (ecstasy), methylamphetamine and cannabis.

The 13 were arrested over 26 drug-related offences.

The Youth Affairs Network of Queensland says police should be targeting drug dealers during police operations to crack down on illegal drug use, instead of users.

More than 40 Brisbane police with sniffer dogs targeted inner-city nightclubs in Fortitude Valley overnight in a major drug operation.

Thirteen people were arrested on more than 20 drug-related charges.

Police also arrested 13 people in a similar raid in Fortitude Valley in April.

Youth Affairs Network spokesman, Siyavash Doostkhah, says young people are the innocent victims of drug dealers.

"Victimising people at the end that are users who are actually - there might be other issues - not the big end of the market where the big drugs are moving in, where the big profits are being made, where the focus of the police operation should be."

I don't know a thing about Brisbane. Is Fortitude Valley close to the city or off on its own somewhere?

They got the headline wrong, this has nothing to do with drug-driving.

POLICE carried out a dual blitz on Brisbane's streets over the weekend – cracking down on drug users and drink drivers.

For the second time this year, police sniffer dogs hit the streets of Fortitude Valley on Saturday night targeting party-goers queueing up outside nightclubs.

Police officers arrested 13 people on 26 drug-related charges.

More than 40 officers were involved in the sting, code-named "Walk the Line 2".

Special drug detection dogs were involved in the operation, sniffing out pedestrians and clubbers hanging around outside party venues.

Small quantities of party drugs such as MDMA, methylamphetamine and cannabis were seized in the operation.

In April, police arrested 13 people on 17-drug related offences after a similar operation.

Police have warned that the raids will continue.

A few hours later, in the early hours of yesterday, police conducted another blitz targeting drink drivers.

Twelve motorists were caught over the 0.05 alcohol limit during a three-hour operation in Alice St, in the inner city.

Police conducted 600 random breath tests on drivers between 3am and 6am.

Police Minister Judy Spence said it was really disappointing to see so many people flouting the law.

"I understand one in 50 people were apprehended for drink driving, which is higher than the Australian average which is one in 100," Ms Spence said.

"So it's disappointing that people leaving nightclubs and pubs in the city think that it's acceptable to be driving home when they are under the influence of alcohol.

"We've already outlined that we have a winter campaign going on throughout the state."

15 min walk from Brisbane CBD. Inner City basically.

Thanks... Just sounded a bit like it wasn't around the city area with the stuff discussed above about people being treated averagely but not really having any other places to go in protest. Is the Brisbane club scene that small?

then again, once you start whittling it down to clubs that play particular music, i guess it's only the big capital cities where there are any decent kind of choices...

Regards to this "Walk the line operation", seems so very media staged. Well, I guess it sells papers 8)

Everyone should get a bunch of free leaf and stash it all over the valley when these raids are about to occur just so the dogs go for that isntead of small amounts of chems.

the doggs are not trained to sniff out cannabis, so they wouldn't pick it up

^^ I don't believe that. Surely THE most common, smelliest drug would be included in the expensive process of training a DRUG sniffer dog.

I've also heard they didn't train them to sniff cvannabis but who knows.

I asked somebody in the business training dogs for sniffing bombs and drugs e.t.c. She reckons some of the dogs are trained for sniffing cannabis and they are capable of it, but the dogs that are trained for sniffing pills and powders are generally trained solely for that and arent trained for sniffing cannabis. goes without saying the dogs trained for sniffing explosive materials are trained solely for that and cant detect drugs.

I was speaking to some mates that were out that night and already on pills. They ended up having to swallow 2 or more pills or so each so they didn't get caught.

Is this what the cops want? Sooner or later someones going to OD.

I wonder what time of night they are doing it?

I heard the latest was around 10pm?

There are reports in the media where the Qld police have stated that these dogs have not been trained to detect cannabis. The Qld police have got dogs capable of this, but they're not interested in picking up pot smokers in these operations in the Valley.

Besides, in QLD possession of under 50 grams of cannabis for a first offence results in "diversion" not a criminal charge. The police often can't be bothered going through the paperwork involved in offering a diversion for a minor cannabis possession offence.

I was quite upset about being searched twice last saturday nite. I had just finished work and walkin to my bike to go home, havent been in presence of drugs at any time during that week. I get pulled up by one of the officers and after they tore my bag apart they continued to persist with questions of why i had a bottle of dex amphetimine scripted in MY NAME! with me. They fact that i'm prescribed them wasnt valid reason apperantly... Pure and utter harrassment. If they had questioned me again the second time they searched me i'm sure i would have been in watch house for disorderly/verbal abuse.

Smaller number were walking around valley at 9pm-11pm. After that another 10-20 officers wearing navyblue jackets with "Police" accross the back arrived

If it really bothers you, you can do something about it. Noting down the names and ranks of the officers and filing a complaint to the Police Ombudsman in your state can at least raise the issue in official circles.

Until young people, especially those who are harassed with nothing on them, start standing up to police, they'll continue to act with bravado. It helps to know your rights in such situations so you don't feel so helpless.

There were cops and a dog outside the [EDIT: Sorry no venue or event names. hoptis]. They were searching someone while we were heading back in.
