RULES
1. Any photograph or variation of a photograph which has been previously submitted for one of the contest rounds cannot be used in subsequent rounds of the contest.

2. Photographs must be your original work and that has never been copyrighted or, if copyrighted, that you are the sole copyright owner of.
2a. No submitting pictures for other people, for friends, etc. Your OWN work, very simple.

3. Only one photograph may be entered per contest.

4. All photographs must be free of watermarks, signatures and borders

5. Photographs must be no wider than 700 and no higher than 700.

6. Deadline for entries is 12am eastern on the posted deadline date.

7. Voting ends at 12am eastern on the posted end date.

8. Post your images in the appropriate thread in the form of an image, not a link to click on.

9. Don't be a dummy and vote for your own photo, try and make it fun.

Be reminded that this is a photo contest and so images which have been heavily manipulated through an image editing software will not be accepted. To put everyone on a level playing field, editing should be restricted to cropping and resizing.

Images which are not relevant to the week's theme will be automatically removed.

If you have a problem with another contestant's entry adhering to the contest guidelines, please PM the forum moderators. Do not try to begin a debate about the issue within the contest submission or poll thread! There will be zero tolerance towards any attempts to devolve a contest thread into a bash-fest or witch hunt.

We will pick the next theme and post it the night a contest ends for the next round so people have a full 7 days to take pictures and submit them. After all the entries have been posted, a poll will be added on the last night, so people can vote. Voting will take place from midnight to midnight over the following 2 days (12am Sunday - 12am Tuesday).

Those who wish to participate in sharing full versions of their entries may do so by providing a link only to the full sized version in the same post as their entry.

Thank you and have fun!

doesnt this raise the issue of the fact that its someone else's artwork being photographed? the theme seems in violation of rule 2.

or is that a non-issue...?

is there a size limitation on the statue/monument itself? IE: can i take a picture of a sculpture?

Statues, sculptures, ect are public domain. They are put on display where they are in order to be seen. I would think every one of those artists expects their work to be photographed or it wouldnt be out. Its not like your going into someones private home and photographing their work without their permission.

i have a bronze sculpture id like to post, but its not really a statue or a monument, its more of a.. well sculpture.

it IS a monument TO something, i suppose. can we post pics of our own statues/monuments?

took this today. the anzac monument is just outside my workplace. in fact, that's my building behind it.

^fucking sick photo. Thats an awesome idea, did you come up with that by yourself? It seems like such an obvious but effective technique that I would think someone has done it before, although I have never seen it. That's not to say of course that you didn't think it up yourself even if someone else did it without you knowing about it, but either way thats damn cool.

i made this when i was 17, as a birthday present for my dad.

its solid bronze. i did a lost wax procedure, and used plaster mixed with fine sand for the mold.

it came out fairly well, no air bubbles or anything. im proud of it considering how young i was when i made it:

if its unclear as to what it is, its a lizard perched on a lightbulb.

because im trying to show off the statue, heres a few other pics of it from different angles. if this is not appropriate, im sure SA will be more than happy to remove them. the above picture is my entry, however.

thank you my friend. i had the phone tilted sideways to get the better proportion and planned to rotate it back, but then decided to go the other direction cuz i put so much emphasis on the reflection. :) <- big smile

dunno how much you know about art, but lost wax process means just that; you make a sculpture out of wax (my favorite medium, you can get details as fine as fingerprints to show up!), then submerge it in plaster mixed with sand (the sand helps to absorb the heat of the molten bronze, and catch the finer details of the peice), after youve made sprues (where you pour the bronze into) and vents (where the air comes out, as the bronze goes in), you stick it in a furnace and melt away all the wax. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sprue_(casting)

then you are left with a negative of the piece you spent hours and hours working on.

after that, you have to heat up the plaster so it doesnt crack when the molten bronze touches it. then, you melt the bronze in a special container (the name is evading me right now...) and pour it slowly into the mold, making sure not to get ANY air bubbles in, as air bubbles ruin the details (like fingers, noses, etc).

you then wait an hour or two (molten bronze is HOT), and dip it in water. then, you use a special soft hammer to chip away the mold revealing the UNIQUE bronze version of your wax piece.

of course, it is NOT pretty at this point--youre only about 1/3 of the way through.

the sprues are still attached, and made of solid bronze, and must be removed and sanded down. there is also something called 'flashing,' which occurs when the molten bronze oozes into places it shouldnt and hardens into a metal puddle, which also needs to be removed and sanded down.

all of that must be sawed off, and the entire peice has to be touched up with a grinder, and then polished.

then you have a plethora of options reguarding finishing (you can color it ALL kinds of ways), i chose the plain bronze because i like the simple elegance of it.

so, although you might like one mz thizzle, its not possible! there is only one!

hehe sorry for rambling, im an art geek.

Wes: That is beautiful!! And I like the you picked my favourite metal for it! :)

As for photos of statues and monuments... ARG I wish I were in former USSR now... or syria for that matter :X
