I am too busy drowning in exams to even go out of town for my American family’s thanksgiving dinner.
 
Are there Thanksgiving traditions not related to the food? Like there are with Christmas or Easter, or Halloween etc, I mean?

The President pardoning a turkey?
Idk what else, and I’m not sure if the current guy in charge had the mental faculties to form enough sentences for that to happen this year.

LOL, I NEED context for this? Pardoning as in the way you pardon a prisoner who is later proven innocent? Or pardon like when someone burps?

But what is the turkey being pardoned OF? This is so confusing lol.

I guess it makes no less sense than the fact that (and I JUST learned that in the U.S. you guys DON'T do this) on Easter, here in Europe, we give kids chocolate eggs* to celebrate...Jesus coming back? IDK lol.

*Nothing to do with egg-eggs, they're MUCH MUCH larger than eggs and made entirely out of chocolate, but hollow...just, egg shaped.
I THINK the chocolate eggs represent the boulder that was in the way of Jesus' tomb or something?

some modern day "traditions" i found on wikipedia

"Other Thanksgiving customs include charitable organizations offering thanksgiving dinner for the poor, attending religious services, and watching or participating in parades and American football games. Thanksgiving is also typically regarded as the beginning of the holiday shopping season. The day following Thanksgiving, Black Friday, is often considered to be the busiest shopping day of the year in the United States. Cyber Monday, the online shopping equivalent to Black Friday, is held on the Monday after Thanksgiving."
 
The Turkey being pardoned is a humorous thing. It was going to be killed and cooked for thanksgiving, but the president pardons them and they go live on a farm somewhere I guess.

We do that in Canada too.
I think America does it as well...

the religion comes with the people who invented the whole thing ...
another part of the wikipedia article:

"The more familiar Thanksgiving precedent accompanied by feasting is traced to the Pilgrims and Puritans who emigrated from England in the 1620s and 1630s."

so it's really that those people who came up with it were religious people who were just celebrating part of their religious rituals, adapted to their new situation.
