Bluelight and the Aussie Internet Filter – Will it affect us?

^yeah it does seem like a bit of a Clayton's choice sometimes - or "bourgeois representative so-called democracy" as we slightly insane old lefties like to call it ;)

Nevertheless - it's been said before but it's worth repeating - when voting is not compulsory, you tend to end up with more conservative/repressive government. Once you take that on board - that by not voting you are potentially contributing to an even worse outcome than you would by voting - then picking "the lesser of two evils" starts to look like the best option

^^
Yeah. I actually have very little faith in mainstream political institutions and I think this election campaign has been a complete joke. But not voting is just submitting to the status quo. At least voting gives you the right to bitch if you end up getting fucked by the government (which we all do in one way or another). But if you can't even be fucked voting then don't come on the internet and complain about political issues which end up influencing your life.

I do love the look of the Secular Party, thank you for pointing our their existence! They've sort of made me give a shit about this election biznezzzz.

It's all about secular party!

Only just found out about this party and they are getting my tick of approval.
We stand for:

* A woman's right to choose an abortion
* Voluntary euthanasia
* The right to die
* Embryonic stem cell research
* Same-sex marriage

We stand against:

* Censorship
* Religious indoctrination of minors
* Counter-productive "anti-terror" restrictions on civil liberties

Been reading over their stuff, they seem spot on with my views. And I'm sure many of you bluelighters will agree ;)

They don't have a direct drug policy as far as I can see. But based on everything else I think they would take it in the right direction.

(Mods if you feel this should be moved to a different location feel free)

any party can sound good by stating what they believe in like that. how they work to achieve these things is what matters. for example they say they want lower taxes yet want to properly fund the health system. wheres the money going to come from or are they going to privatise the health system.

but yeah they seem like a party i mostly agree with although alot of these minor parties ignore economic policies and focus on social issues.

as for voting i dont believe it should be compulsary however ppl who dont vote let themselves down and are misguided imo.

Secular party say they want to seperate Church and State. i.e. Religions would no longer be tax emept. That would bring in HEAPS of extra tax.

That being said, there is no way I'm going to see them elected, at least not in my lifetime. But it can't hurt to try! :D

Yeah agreed it's easy for parties to say one thing but how they go about it can be completely different. But I honestly can't remember ever seeing a party with policies that I agreed with more. If I ever wanted to start a political party it would be very similar to this.

It's pretty much exactly what my best mate said except he refuses to "give away" his vote with a party that won't get elected.

I can understand why people vote that way, but I think if everyone actually followed politics even a little bit and voted for the party they agree with you would see a big shift in the polls.

Also to me it just makes sense that you support the group you agree with. If you vote for a group because a different group is gonna win, then it makes you a sell-out. I didn't stay up watching the world cup just to go for the team that was kicking our ass.

Coalition to dump flawed internet filter.

Coalition to dump flawed internet filter

The federal coalition has announced it will scrap controversial plans for an internet filter if it wins the August 21 election.

Opposition treasury spokesman Joe Hockey said on Thursday a coalition government would abandon Labor's "flawed" filter policy.

Instead, a Tony Abbott-led government would encourage parents to take more responsibility for monitoring their children's use of the web.

"We believe the internet filter will not work," Mr Hockey told ABC Radio's Triple J.

"We believe it's flawed policy. It's not going to capture a whole lot of images and chatter that we all find offensive that are going through email."

Asked if the coalition would vote in favour of Labor's internet filtering policy in Parliament if it didn't win the election, Mr Hockey said they wouldn't.

The coalition would give parents greater control, he said.

"The ISP-based filter system does not work.

"Therefore it creates a level of assumption of trust that cannot be met by the technology."

Opposition communications spokesman Tony Smith later confirmed the coalition's new policy position.

"A coalition government will not introduce a mandatory ISP level filter," he said in a statement.

"We will instead implement practical and effective measures to enhance online safety and security including PC-based filters for families."

Mr Smith said Labor's plan would not work and the coalition had "a different and better approach".

A spokesman for Mr Smith said a "comprehensive" online security policy would be released in "the coming days".

Mr Hockey has long been a critic of the government's proposed filter.

Earlier this year, he said it would create the "infrastructure" for government censorship on a broad scale.

"I have personal responsibility as a parent," he said in March.

"If I want to stop my children from viewing material that I feel is inappropriate then that is my responsibility to do something about it - not that of the government."

The Greens Party, which has vowed it too would vote against the policy, welcomed the coalition's comments.

"This is excellent news and the Liberal Party should be congratulated for finally declaring their hand," said Greens communications spokesman Senator Scott Ludlam.

Australian online users' lobby group Electronic Frontiers Australia (EFA) also welcomed the coalition's stance.

"We applaud Mr Hockey's announcement that the Liberal Party will vote against Labor's filter," said EFA spokesman Colin Jacobs. "The Opposition are very welcome among the ranks of those many organisations and individuals that see the filter as a policy failure."

Communications Minister Stephen Conroy last month delayed the introduction of Labor's controversial filter while a review of material to be blocked is undertaken.

The review is expected to take 12 months.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard isn't budging on dropping the unpopular internet filter, saying it is a moral judgment the government needs to make.

The coalition and the Greens are unlikely to support proposed new laws that will see inappropriate content filters through internet service providers.

But, Ms Gillard remains defiant: "The internet filter is appropriate".

"It is unlawful for me to go to the cinema and watch some certain sorts of content, that's unlawful, we believe it to be wrong," she told the Queensland Media Club in Brisbane on Tuesday.

"Content that is child abuse, incredibly violent pornography, we say that is wrong and we don't show it in Australian cinemas.

"If we accept that, then it seems to me the moral question is not changed by the medium that the image has come through."

She said the government is working through how the internet filter could be introduced without slowing down connection speed or accidentally banning content that is appropriate.

Under the plan, all Internet Service Providers (ISP) in Australia would be required to use a filter to block sites that are refused classification by the The Australian Communications and Media Authority, including child sexual abuse imagery, bestiality, sexual violence, detailed instruction in crime, violence or drug use and material that advocates the doing of a terrorist act.

I was under the impression it will be easy to bypass for anyone who knows anything about computers

It will be easy for anyone to bypass who knows anything about computers, which is even more the reason of why it's a waste of tax payers dollars. And I find it personally very insulting, and I'm a very easy going guy.

That's one of the most stupid things - the filter will be incredibly easy to bypass with the right knowledge.T he child pornography rings which this filter is 'supposed' to target won't even notice the filter happened. Most of the groups already conceal their activities through the use of encryption, proxys etc. so they will be completely untouched apart from the decrease in internet speed that the whole country will feel.

The police state is for you!

ITS CAUSE ITS FOR YOU! THE PEOPLE!

NOT THE FUCKING PEDOPHILES!

jesus christ wake up people. ALL THE TERROR LAWS, ALL THE POLICE POWERS...ARE FOR YOU!!!

And its only getting worse. If you actually read state and federal law, you would be fucking appauled. THIS IS NO LONGER AUSTRALIA, THE LUCKY COUNTRY!

Just TRY and have a peacefull assembly in the country now. You WILL have the multi pronged fucking riot squad crack down on you so hard you won't know what hit you...

They have rules in place so that if we DO take to the streets that they will ARREST us as TERRORISTS!

This is true! ..

But of course, the mainstream media wouldnt tell you that. No they feed you stories about some nobody's day in court or that some idiot got bitten by a lion, or that a cop has beaten another person senseless with no punishment..or how the carbon tax is GOOD!

Not... "Today a new law was passed TOTALLY taking all your freedoms away....here's tim with the weather."

Yeah its some pretty rubbish news, the filter is pretty easy to avoid.

The sad part is that most child pornography is downloaded via P2P and good luck to them blocking that, it is sad that the mainstream fall for this rubbish. 'child pornography' my arse.

and TrippAR your totaly preaching to the converted *tightens tinfoil hat* :p , most people on bluelight are the types of people that do the research and like doing it so of course not many of us bluelighters believe what the media tells us.

It won't get passed. How long has it been?
Its just political bullcrap. This always happens. Lag something out and make an announcement on it every 6 months... until it drops into the background and everyone forgets it. I mean cant people see this. Its never going to work

^ Im not so sure about that, the bigger issue here is that it keeps being brought up despite its unpopularity. I agree that it will never work if they implement it but thats not to say they wont try. Hell look at the war on drugs, its redundant and costly but that hasnt stopped them.

I dont keep up with aussie politics. American politics is so much more funny. Aussie is too serious. We don't have a team of Oreillys and Becks and Hannity's here and I dont think we have retarded hockey mums running for prime minister who believe dinosaurs were on this planet along with humans 6000 years ago...

So if somebody could enlighten me as to how many seats in the seate are Greens and Liberals and Nationals over Labor? Surely it will keep getting outvoted by the majority of government?
