blue result with mandelin on white powder

maybe i dono, but didn't have a numbing effect though. so maybe not.

anyways on a side note, us Adelaider'blérs should get together sometime like how the melbourneérs did a few weeks back. watdoya think :)

With which reagent/s? Did you have any other way of confirming it was MDA - melting point, etc? Thing is, all the literature on reagent reactions reports some purple-black after the blue is observed with both Marquis and Mandelin. That's with MDMA, and MDA reports don't mention blue at all. In all the years I was involved with reagent development, I never heard about a blue only reaction for any MDXX compound.

Anyway, from the above post, headdah's sample didn't turn black, so it definitely doesn't look like MD.. anything.

It was with Mandelin, the pill was a white versace, i hadn't had much experience with test kits before, but the mandelin sheet distinctly showed a blue to purple/black reaction to be MDA as opposed to MDMA (which was just purple to black). This reaction took quite some time, and went a very royal blue, much like that of a simons reaction.

I have no other scientific information to back up these claims - and this is getting on 7 years ago.

Very interesting MrIbis.

As for impurities screwing with the reagent reaction, very unlikely, to this degree anyway - that's if it is an MDXX compound, synthesised via one of the usual routes. Without knowing more, at this stage everything is a guess. One possible explanation is that something has been intentionally added that is colourless, but forms a blue product when oxidised by a strong acid. However, my concern is the possibility that the active may contain the naphthalene moiety, which could definitely react with sulphuric acid. Many intermediates for this class of dye are produced by sulphonating the aromatic ring of naphthalene with H2SO4. It doesn't appear that it's naphyrone though, as reports elsewhere state naphyrone produces a yellow coloured product with Marquis.

So, if someone does have a sample and can do the following*, we might be able to eliminate a couple of things. Firstly, we need to see if it will form the same blue coloured compound with other (non-sulphur containing) acids. A test with pool acid should suffice, but a test with a diluted Marquis could also shed some light (add 2 drops of reagent (ACID) to 3 drops of WATER - always add the acid to water and never the other way around). If either of these tests produces the same colour, then we can eliminate the notion of a naphthalene ring.
