Bloodshed in Gaza: "It's a hell of a pinpoint operation"

Child abuse/paedophilia is probably a lot closer to home for a lot of people than some people they have never met being blown up by jews. I know 5 people that were abused/raped as children one of them by 2 completely different people (thrown in a canal and left to die for good measure) and that's just the ones I know about.

I understand (very well, without going into detail) that child abuse is a more immediately emotive issue to those who may have been affected by it, but as for people not caring about "some people they have never met being blown up by jews", aren't the Yewtree abuse victims strangers too? Didn't the abuse happen years ago? Don't the abuse survivors at least have a shot at getting 'justice'?

Besides, rape of adults (usually women) is far more prevalent than child sex abuse, but if I were to start a thread about rape conviction rates being scandalously low, I can guarantee it'd be on page 21 within a week.

Per-fucking-spective.

I'm not saying child rape is ok.
Or that suffering is relative - it isn't.
But as far as media coverage, public sentiment goes - just like with the Ukraine situation, the western media only makes a slight effort when - dare I say it - middle class westerners are victims.
Never mind Ukraine's continuing civil war, mass displacement of people from their homes or other planes being shot down - but again; I've fallen for the old "spectacle" trick - less people, killed in more "familiar" circumstances than the Gaza ghetto, push this heinous barbarism out of public/media discourse.
Fuck Israel. Racist thug state.

It's because it has to do with religion, and therefore is beyond criticism -- you can't say anything bad about Jews or Muslims, and people have to be able to be free to believe whatever they like, even in the face of evidence to the contrary.

Even in the case of the staunchest advocates for secularism, any talk of abolishing religion altogether is likely to be dismissed as throwing out the baby with the bathwater. What nobody seems capable of admitting is that the baby is dead and the rancid bathwater is now an environmental health hazard.

Another reason is it's unlikely to ever directly affect affect their lives, where as child abuse or rape is a very real danger for parents and women. People are selfish I guess.

Pretty short sighted in reality as conflicts in the middle east give plenty of ammunition for the radicalisation of people which is a very real danger for everyone.

Palestinians aren't treated in our media as human beings the same way as western people or people we're encouraged to identify with (goodies (usually white)). If palestinians (or any other non-goody people) were humanised in our media the same way as europeans and americans are the reaction would follow. Every time you see arabs who've been bombed it's no conincidence that we usually see them screaming and banging their heads to confirm our own prejudices (even though anyone would react this way to such horror), but rarely have indepth follow ups where we can sympathise with them as being the same as us. When it's israelis (or whoever) we do see this.

I don't think you can blame people who are herded psychologically their whole lives to inculcate this reflexive racism in the service of our 'national interest'. I don't think the propaganda strategy is racist in origin, just good old imperialism: it's always the countries that are offical 'good guys' that are the ones we humanise with, and the official bad guys who are militants or terrorists (even when they aren't), or when they are victims they're funny foreigners who we don't know the names of.

(though saying that, i've noticed a little increase in humanisation of palestinians over the last few days; seemingly in response to the demos outside BBC offices in the last week (and the many complaints and petitions in the same period).

Yep, and yep.

Meanwhile, Eviator Manor had this to offer:

"Israel will destroy Hamas' military infrastructure," Israel's ambassador to the body, Eviatar Manor, said, referring to the Palestinian militant group controlling Gaza. "However, the Gaza residents are not our enemy. Israel is fully committed to international law," he added.

It's nothing to do with religion. Religion is merely a tool used to aggravate the conflict and rally supporters to the cause.

Do you think Northern Ireland was a religious conflict? It wasn't. Not until the British occupiers realised its potency as a force for polarisation.

Please don't use this tragedy to promote some secularist agenda, however much you may believe it's the solution to the problem.

Aye, it's about land.
And domination, the politics of persecution and cycles of abuse.

My take anyway.

I think it's because it's terribly upsetting to see this n it's easier to ignore than to think as it can be distressing knowing what's happening n that there's nothing that can be done. That's me anyway - I find it terribly distressing knowing that others are going through this. And then I think of my child n what I'd feel like if it was her this was happening to. It doesn't bear thinking about.

As for the "pedo" discussion you'll be surprised to the extent of how many are actually affected - either by being abused themselves or having a relation to/ friends with or partner who has abused a minor n what-not. As well as this, what's happening at the moment with these celebrities has truly shocked people to the core. We grew up with Saville, Harris n so on. These people were idols to quite a lot of people. So, of course, there's going to be a lot of discussion around it.

However, I don't think that it's a case of people thinking it's more important or whatever. I think that people talk about what's closer to home "to them," as what's been said.

Exactly. And it could have been avoided had Israel not opposed the PLO / Hamas reconciliation government that was formed in June. A government which (ironically) is far more moderate and less likely to endorse tunnels and rocket attacks than the previous Hamas-dominated administration.

But hey - three students kidnapped and murdered? Let's go and 'mow the lawn' again. :|

I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest, as I acknowledged in an earlier post. It's something that's closer to home than I'd like to talk about, but I still see the situation in Gaza as being a zillion times more important than historical cases of sexual abuse, utterly horrific as they may be.

And yes, I acknowledge that the celebrity aspect of it sparks further interest. I just think it's a terrible shame that this kind of outrage is largely ignored in comparison.

Probably best to leave the paedo thing there, as it's not really contributing much to the thread other than (ironically) proving my point. Which was a throwaway aside anyhow. :)

If only someone could whip out an infographic showing exactly how many Israeli and Palestinian paedophiles were killed in recent conflict.

^ IDF/paedos - what's the difference?
They both fuck kids.

In my darker moments I like to think about what will happen to Israel when the USA is usurped as a "superpower" in more than just symbolic and economic terms.

But then I just look at Gaza and realise it'd be the same old pattern of revolting violent retribution.

One of my biggest bugbears with the Israeli occupation/killing machine is my country's implicit support for it.
Western global dominance is receding fast - and not a moment too soon.

^ this

The west is crumbling. China provides like, heaps of cheap research chemicals n shit man, have some respect ;)

Let's see what comes of this (probably nothing, but hey):

Carter Ruck, lawyers for al-Jazeera, have written to the Israeli prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, accusing Israel of "clear contravention of international law" after it said shots were fired into the broadcaster's Gaza offices yesterday. The letter, seen by the Guardian, also accuses foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman of inflammatory and inaccurate remarks after he accused al-Jazeera of "anti-Semitic, incitement, lies, provocation" the day before the offices were hit.

The letter concludes:

In light both of Mr Lieberman's entirely unjustifiable statement and of the unprovoked attack on its office today. Al-Jazeera will hold the government of Israel to account for any loss of life, injury or damage that is incurred by its personnel or property at the hand of Israel's representatives or agents. Al Jazeera and, in particular, its journalists working in the field, must not be the subject of any further aggressive and inflmmatory rhetoric or any further physical violence.

The letter was also copied to UN secretary general Ban Ki-Moon, UK prime minister David Cameron, French president Francois Hollande, Chinese president President Xi Jinping, Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin.

Are you ok, Sammy? I can see that this has all upset you n that you do truly care about what's happening / happened over there.

Remember when you read media coverage , it may not always be true. Media like to exaggerate things sometimes as it get attention ie papers bought, more viewers n so forth.

Here if you need to talk ok. We are interested n we're listening /reading.

Suicide donkeys? Fucking hell. And that's a real news item too. :D

I'm okay Evey. Thanks for asking. I'm just getting a little bit excited about the news, plus I lost £20 this morning, I'm trying to come off etizolam and I desperately need some drugs. I'll be able to sort the latter out this evening anyhow.
