Hi. I am a proud father of three wonderful children, but over the past two-and-a-half years my eldest son has deteriorated rapidly as a result of his using BMBs. I have tried to be compassionate and understanding, but my patience is really wearing thin and it is having a detrimental effect on my other children. To cut a long story short, he complains that he will suffer tremendous withdrawal symptoms if he discontinues the use of these compounds. Does anybody have any experience of this, and do you have any tips for dealing with it? I will be overjoyed to see the ban enacted but I truly fear the fallout. Here's hoping there's a way of resolving it speedily. Thank you!

Is it just me?but wtf is BMB - if it's slang for something could you elaborate as then may be able to help.

ahh Ok so its a synthetic cannabis in which case unless it has something particularly nasty in it (unlikely as I think its still legal and seems to be mostly made up of the active ingredients synthetic cannabinoid AM-2001 and oleamide, an oleic acid - but Im no expert on these matters). It is not going to induce withdrawels, not physical anyway but like most drugs it can have Psychological addictive properties

From what I can see Black Mamber used to be a name for a 'herbal smoke' brand main ingredient noted as 'Damiana'. If they are smoking a range of these 'Spice' or synthetic cannabis products then that is a different matter considering some of the ingredients.

When you look at the product 'Spice' and it's ever changing ingredients and now look at how many people are physically addicted and talking about the WD's being as bad, if not worse in some cases as opiates.

The ban will just move these things underground where there will be less control of what is going into them etc.

I can't answer your question BigJoe, having never got into these synthetic cannabinoids in a big way. But many of us here have and there are several threads dedicated to the subject. There are dozens, if not hundreds of these cannabinoids on the market at present, and just because the blend is called Blackmamba, it doesn't mean it contains the same active compound every time. He's basically playing Russion roulette with his head and body. How would you feel if he was just using regular cannabis? Does he not have access to cannabis? Do you? If so, I'd get him some sharpish and try and wean him off the blends ASAP...

The Black Mamba isn't the actual drug, it's a brand name... Probably the best course of action would be to find out which cannaboid is in it and work from there. They are known for withdrawls, so I'd imagine your son would need to taper down his use before stopping completely.

Yeah that's fucked up. Those blends really are nasty IMO, it's like passing off heroin under the innocent veil of it being weed, in terms of it being physically addictive and capable of causing withdrawl symptoms, which real cannabis ofcourse does not.

With 'a lot' of these herbal highs they use one of the many synthetic cannabinoids - at first a lot of them were using the JWH type of drugs but once that got banned they moved onto other substances HU, AH and the list continues.

There was an article in Vice a while ago showing the number of people addicted to it - link here.

No, it's definitely the Black Mamba he's addicted to. He has some of that 'Spice', but it wasn't strong enough, apparently. :(

Spice and Black Mamba are names of the product - its like saying your addicted to Smirnoff when you addicted to vodka.

Synthetic Marijuana - Common Street Names: K2, Spice, Incense, Fake Weed, Yucatan Fire, Genie, Skunk, Moon Rocks, Zohai, Black Mamba.

Identified compounds (in these packs) include HU-210, CP 47,497 and homologues, JWH-018, JWH-073, JWH-398, JWH-250 and oleamide.2

Like we've said, the name Black Mamba means nothing. Also, the herbal substrate is irrelevent, it's the active ingredient that matters - It could contain anything from a fairly benign cannabinoid to totally lethal one. They are very dose sensitive in general and in the space of a few tokes on a spliff can go from a pleasant experience to seizure/total organ failure territory. Tolerance also builds very rapidly, so if he does manage to cut down, make sure he's aware of this potential. another problem is that the blends are not very well blended, and some parts of the bag can contain 'hotspots' where the dose is highly concentrated.

Why will he only smoke Black Mamba then? He's very particular about it. It must be the Black Mamba alone that's doing this.

In a way your correct - the contents of the package may be what he prefers. The company making the brand 'Black Mamba' may be using a certain blend of chemicals that ticks his boxes.

Because he prefers that blend. Black Mamba is a BLEND of whatever herb they're using mixed with the CANNABOIDS which give the effect he is chasing.

He probably doesn't know this himself.. it's like Ecstasy the active ingredient is MDMA, but it's mixed with a binder and pressed into pills called "UFO's" or whatever else. They are using the cannaboids which are a synthetic chemical to mimmic THC, then infusing them into whatever herb works best so it is similar in appearance to Weed.

Ignorance and habit basically. He could try other blends which he might prefer, and others not so much. There is NO guarantee that he will get the same blend everytime, even if it's the same packaging with the same name. Due to the fucked up laws in this country, the suppliers are under no obligation to list the active ingredient, and are forbidden from supplying any usage or dosage information. If you google around a bit, you may be able to find what the typical ingredient in this blend is. The next step would be to purchase this ingredient in pure powdered form from one of the many RC vendors on the net. This can be added to tobacco or herbal tobacco (in minute quantities) as a regular spliff. Then you will have some control over the dosage and be able to reduce himslowly over the next couple of months until the ban takes effect.

Synthetic cannabinoids are to cannabis what crack is to cocaine - much more potent, much faster acting, and much shorter duration of effect. So in this way they absolutely can cause compulsive redosing, rapid withdrawal symptoms and quick development of tolerance, leading to trapping people in compulsive, heavy, repeat usage patterns with some very unpleasant psychiatric and physical addiction effects. I know people who got so embroiled in this stuff they couldn't sleep without waking up every hour to smoke more of it.

I don't think there is any easy answer to this, they are so cheaply available relative to real cannabis and also much easier to obtain.

If it is getting to the point where it is seriously damaging your relationship with your son and also damaging his health, the best option is to try and get him engaged with some treatment services or even admission to hospital for a managed detox.

Does the company publish any data regarding the composition of the Black Mamba? I can't tell from the packaging at all. All I can find is 'synthetic cannabinoid', which is why I assumed that the Black Mamba was a name for a legal high. I've heard of things called dragonfly and m-cat, so I thought it was along those lines.

No they don't usually give the names of the active ingredient that openly as this would make them liable if the substance was controlled etc - dragonfly and m-cat are different drugs all together.

You can send a sample off for lab testing to find out what your actually dealing with - Wedinos free of charge and they will publish the results online.

Good post, but bear in mind that if he goes into treatment it will be on his medical records for life as a drug seeker...

^ I think it is a real shame if that puts people off seeking treatment. I know it has made my life more difficult having been in hospital with drug problems in the past, but there are a lot of good doctors out there who will treat people with compassion regardless, and I think openness is key here. Especially where family is involved.

Is there some way to wash part of the Black Mamba off the leaves and then re-dry them? I could reduce his dose that way without his knowledge, and wean him off.

I think that risks undermining trust even more, ideally you should talk to him and make sure he is aware of the damage it is causing to family life and try to discuss reducing the dosage with him.
