Social Justice Black Lives Matter Discussion Thread

They have good reason to be.

In our current society, what possible good reason could someone have to be racist?

I would strongly encourage you to think carefully before answering this question.

Identity politics divides us by it's very definition. Under the present cultural pressures we are all encouraged to think along racial lines. It encourages division, not unity.

And, I think there is something deeper to be explored here. At some point we need to acknowledge the flaws that create division, assess them, and learn how to move beyond the barriers that divide us.

The very first would be to stop thinking along racial lines, or is that too obvious?

Black Lives Matter is divisive.

All Lives Matter is inclusive.

I heard something this morning that really rung true for me but I'll have to paraphrase.

Having a single spokesperson for any group of people is a dangerous mindset and an easy one to get into especially if you aren't part of the group to begin with. It's important to have several people of that particular identity (black people for example) as a source for information in order to overcome common pitfalls associated with bigotry.

I think it’s a very complex and multifaceted issue, and the chasms that were created due, in part, to our own evolutionary survival mechanisms remain to this day, require a lot more nuanced approaches to achieve change on a much broader and deeper level. I have no doubt it’s possible and I have the utmost faith we are capable of achieving that as a species.

What you say is true. Deru. That doesn't change the fact that Identity Politics divides people. I won't condemn it, however I suggest that it doesn't work. Identity Politics just creates zealots on polar opposite viewpoints creating barriers that prevent the solution to work as intended.

It was a valid experiment, but failed miserably.

You can't see in my head Wolfgang, so please don't judge my capacity for understanding.

I condemn all forms of racial supremacy. We all should be looking at our similarities, not differences in our fellow humans. As long as we concentrate on difference we shall never overcome racism in the world.
However one cannot force any segment of society to change. It has to come from within.

i think that's only true if you choose to think that black lives matter = only black lives matter and not black lives matter = black lives matter too

because, black lives matter too = all lives matter

so you can make a choice to see it as an intended statement about equality not supremacy.
