Any interesting stories from Monday night
@TheLoveBandit ?
I've been avoiding this thread to keep the mojo going.
I had a work call scheduled during the game, but moved it to Tuesday night so I could focus. Put on the same shirt+sweatshirt combo I wore for all the tournament games, still unwashed so a bit itchy. Ordered the same pizza deal (I am so sick of pizza at this point). And tried to remain calm throughout the game.
I think Duke was a tougher matchup, grateful Houston beat them. Auburn semi-final was physical, but we were used to that from SEC play. I wanted to give AU credit for giving the best they had (2 leaders injured) but then after I started seeing all the cheap shots and no-calls they got away with. Serious off the ball unnecessary hits that could be flagrants, not the usual going for the ball / let em play stuff.
Word on Houston was tremendous defense and physical, keeping scores low. I hoped we didn't carry any injuries from the AU game, and we didn't. Didn't know if we could out pace them, but was pleased with an opening pace that was up and down, not slow and controlled like I would expect them to want for the low scoring games. I was concerned about their defense but had confidence in our depth and grit. It was a loooong game watching us never really have a lead, but I'd gotten used to these boys coming from behind. Within 10 is always within range, as the team proved over several of their last games. I give Houston a LOT of credit for clean, hard play to sustain their defense; gameplanning to shut down Clayton was very effective to keep him from scoring, but he was feeding others for assists, so he remained engaged and unbothered. And, he didn't force his shots, but accepted they were on him so much that his team mates would have better shot opportunities.
I'm on a gator fan site, so been rehashing a lot of the play after the fact. A few points on our players:
- Condon - projected may go pro, I don't think that's wise. He was good earlier in the season, but at the end and thru conf and ncaa tournies he was a little injured and a lot of lacking confidence. He showed no offensive moves, and got pushed around a lot on defense by whomever he was matched up against. He needs another year. At least. Oy, and I was cussing the hell out of him during the game. 3 travels early in the game made turnovers with no chance to score, on top of no off or def skills. Did it again in the second half, running down and shouldering a guy = turnover, no chance to score. But, coming up with the game ending loose ball makes it hard to hate him too much.
- Chinyelu - has 2 more years, needs them to develop. Solid beast on winning rebounds on either end, his points are typically put backs. But he needs to develop. He'll be fun to keep as a big man, though he also gets pushed around a bit.
- Handlogten - sheesh...glad he pulled off the redshirt for final 7 games as it helped the rotation. But, any skill he had was lost during the year of recovery. Right now, he's just a big thug shoving people around (commits 3x the fouls he is called for), and in the last 2 games I saw him at the rim getting blocked by smaller players. Nobody has his height and weight, and he's getting blocked? Wtf? Man up.
- Hough - love the kid, all heart and able to flex perimeter to rim on off and def. No complaints, just want to see where his ceiling is going to end up.
- Richard - sucked on shooting as of late but that turned around in the final and was the key to keeping us in it at all early on. His defense has sucked for a long time, but also bumped that up a bit in the final. I think he may see Euro league from here, not NBA material.
- Martin - all heart, fatherly leadership on the court having been to a final 4 with FAU, but just wired to be tenacious on defense. Slashing scorer that throws up errant 3s early on, I guess to set up the slashing later. Another one for the Euro league. He's probably the one I am the happiest for out of all of them, and I appreciate what he brought to the team in getting the culture and mindset right.
- Clayton - love that kid, the video at the end of him looking around in amazement was so real and surreal. There's talk of NBA, and I hope he gets it, but I don't know if he can rise to the level needed to be a star there. Maybe. We'll have to see.
The 04's that won back-to-back in 06-07 were a tight knit group that worked well together. The second year they won they were THE team to beat in the nation, getting thru the brackets wasn't asured, but expected. These guys? They loved each other as well and played unselfishly, but they were a random group of misfits from the get go under a coach many of us were doubting, especially after the first round loss last year. Golden proved he can find the right misfits and get them to work together great, and that he is a very good coach beyond his baby face as evident by his adjustments in time outs and halftime. We always came out more focused in the second half, so playing from behind was never a concern for the kids. For the fans, hell yes, but not the players. It'll be interesting to see how we refit the backcourt - have some good freshman coming in but still need a proven PG. In Golden we trust.
