Ok, the time has arrived to choose our first selection. The length of time that we will allocate for reading the book is pretty much open-ended and unlimited, but I want to hold off on discussion of whatever book is chosen for at least a couple weeks. I imagine that the number of people that are reading/have finished reading will start to increase once the spring univ. semester is finished, so in an effort to attempt some rough type of order I would like to try to co-ordinate the discussion/comments with that date in mind. I might come up with a few rules or guidelines later, such as using spoiler tags if discussing some type of plot development or whatnot, but that is far in the future.

Each of these books is a title suggested by someone in the previous discussion thread, located here. I'm going to leave the task of describing or linking to descriptions of the books to their respective proponents. If you really want your book to be chosen, you'll get off your ass (figuratively) and make a few typing and clicking motions. That shouldn't be too much to ask ;). As in the Create An Avatar Contest (link ;)) subject selection polls (link ;)), it is permissible to vote for your own selection, as voting for your own selection lets me know that you are still interested in participating. If you can't even participate enough to vote for your own selection, then you aren't interested enough for us to choose your book, and I will remove it from the poll. That is not to say that you are required to vote for your own selection. If you think that someone else might have a better selection that you would rather read, by all means vote for it. It's only if someone doesn't vote at all that I care about.

If anyone hasn't yet proposed a book, you can do so after the poll has already been started, but once the votes reach a certain level I won't accept any more submissions, because we could get into a bunch of requests for vote changes and it could be a huge pain in the ass. Whatever that level of votes is will be decided by me for largely subjective reasons :D. Late submissions can be submitted in the form of a post in this thread or a pm to me.

There is no need to purchase these books. You can probably find almost any book that we end up choosing at the library. Many libraries are a part of a network of libraries, so even if they don't have the book available in the library you are at, you can probably get it through inter-library loan. Even if all the copies of the book are checked out at all the libraries, you can put the book on hold, and as soon as it becomes available they will let you know and you can pick it up. You need never spend money on any of these books, other than in late fees if you fail to return it on time. But late fees are quite small, usually around 5 cents a day, and you almost always have the option of renewing the book for another borrowing period. This notification will be posted in nearly every thread regarding the book club, so if it takes off expect to see it often. I don't want people not participating because they can't afford to buy the book.

Lastly, I thought this might be an opportunity to introduce a fun little exhibition arts contest . I am looking for someone to design a BL book club selection seal/club logo. Check out the thread *link for thread forthcoming*.

I really hope that this works out, because to a book nerd like me it sounds like a lot of fun, and like a great way to be exposed to new books and new authors. Thanks in advance for your interest and participation. :)

P.S.

Please do not vote in the poll if you have no intention of reading the book or participating in the discussion!

While a bunch of people might come in here and vote for Junky because they know it's about dope, but have no intention of doing anything other than voting in the poll, it will skew the results, and we might end up reading a book that almost no one who actually is participating wanted to read (nothing wrong with Junky in particular, some of you have read my high praise of the book, but I just needed an example). Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

I had thought about not submitting a book myself because it would be some sort of conflict of interest, but then I realized that that idea was just silly and I was pretty stupid to even think it in the first place. It was short-lived belief. ;)

My suggestion is The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test by Tom Wolfe. I thought it would be a great subject for a community like BL, and I have been wanting to read it for some time now. I have also never read anything by Wolfe, and I really want to check him out. I think that there is a wealth of discussion material in the topics covered in the book, and while I generally read fiction, this is a nonfiction book I think I could really sink my teeth into. Also, despite the fact that it is non-fiction, it is often referred to as having some of the qualities of the novel. One article refers to it as "literary journalism."

A short description from Amazon.com:

Tom Wolfe's much-discussed kaleidoscopic non-fiction novel chronicles the tale of novelist Ken Kesey and his band of Merry Pranksters. In the 1960s, Kesey led a group of psychedelic sympathizers around the country in a painted bus, presiding over LSD-induced "acid tests" all along the way. Long considered one of the greatest books about the history of the hippies, Wolfe's ability to research like a reporter and simultaneously evoke the hallucinogenic indulgence of the era ensures that this book, written in 1967, will live long in the counter-culture canon of American literature.

The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test by Tom Wolfe.

My absolute favorite read of all time. Truth be told (my gf's too, we have so much in common it's irritatingly cute).

Thank you so much for all your hard work in compiling this, it's such an asset to the community to be able to engage in things of this nature, I mean, when you want to just hang out and be social, but serious at the same time which means the lounge is out of the question, it's nice that you've made second opinion a place to go for that kind of social practice.

3 Cheers for PW.

I won't vote because I am terrible at making time to read (I have so many books half read and not finished - what can I say, I get bored easily), but, and this is a big but, if the electric kool aid acid test gets voted then I may get a copy and read it on the way to work on the train so I can participate - I wanted to read it for ages!

people did a sucky job at pitching their suggestion! i voted, though. i wanna start reading more.

^ you should make out pretty well regardless of which one gets chosen. I know most of the books, or at least their authors, and it's a fine selection. I don't know what your tastes is books are, but a lot of the selections are pretty good.

I voted Ishmael, but I know it won't make it. I hope the acid test does though, that'd be a hell of a great conversation.

Veto: A fine balance. 624 pages is too long.

I am going to wait and vote for either Spook Country or Junky whichever has the best chance of winning, because both are godlike pieces of literature.

good to know. seriously, I didn't know that, and I can imagine if it won some ppl might be like "600 pages?! fuck that!" I wouldn't mind but I know a lot would.

I won't eliminate it from the running, but I'm sure people will consider that before they vote.

Yeah, I just wanted to mention it.

He's a great author, I read Such a Long Journey and loved it, but not enough to plow through a book that must have taken a forest to print.

OH SHI- lol. Sorry I have never been part of a book club so I didn't know if there was some type of etiquette in regards to length.

I don't know if there is or not either. I've also never been part of a book club. I'm not sure how long my suggestion is either, but I know some of his books are kinda long. I didn't think about how long it was either.

Whatever, though. I mean, I want as many people to participate as possible, but I guess we can't worry too much about the number of pages. If people are that concerned with length then they probably wouldn't enjoy this type of thing too much anyway. It's supposed to be fun, not like some sort of homework assignment that you slog through. I personally don't care how long the book is. I read books longer than that all the time. In fact, I like longer books. It often means the story is better.

I voted for The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test by Tom Wolfe because I've never read it.

ditto, its a book i have been meaning to read forever. i figure this will give me good motivation to do so.

Well, I'm still watching with trepidation to see which one comes out on top - I'll hold back with my vote at this stage because it will drastically sway the competition - if Brave New World or Electric Aid come out on top then I'll pick up a copy and join the 'reading club'... That sounds so geeky!!! =D
