Bizzarre Side Effect After Decades Of Use

Did he typically remember his dreams in the past? I know part of the reason I make sure to smoke before bed is because if I remember my dreams, they are horrible and unpleasant...so the pot helps me to not remember them. I've never head of that honestly, and get the feeling it has a cause other than the pot.

I agree with purple_cloud. Whenever I smoke within a few hours before bedtime I can't seem to remember my dreams. I have speculated that remembering dreams is dependent on waking up in a certain cycle of sleep related to the dream. I think this because Cannabis usually helps me sleep deeply throughout the night, or at least without waking up, and it also makes me forget my dreams. Also, the opposite could also be true, as I have read somewhere that marijuana was observed to disturb REM sleep and other deeper sleep cycles. As these states of sleep are often associated with dreaming, perhaps this supposed inability to enter said states is responsible for my inability to remember dream sequences as clearly as I do sleeping sober.

But these are just some ideas, I won't pretend that I know they are at all correct. Everyone reacts differently, and I don't doubt that your friend has been having vivid dreams. But from what I have gathered from myself and others, smoking marijuana usually has the opposite effect on dreaming. Perhaps it is due to some recent emotional stress... that is what usually gives me "bad dreams" especially when I was a young-un.

dreams are directly related to what yer thinkig about ie stress can cause this as stated .
You can actually dream what you want at time by just constantly thinking about a certain thing before falling alseep.
What goes on in yer life is proportionat to what you dream .
The lymbic system of the brain used in dreaming is also directly related to your subconsious.
So if yer all good then ya ussualy will dream good .
If life sux at the time yull probably have bad dreams...so on and so on.....

The dreaming process goes on not only while we are asleep, but also while we are awake. During our waking period, we integrate our dreams by remembering and cataloging them. If we do not remember our dreams we cannot properly sort them out consciously, and all sorts of issues will remain unsolved. All it takes is some biochemical or psychological condition to once again permit dream recall, and then we are faced with all those things we failed to integrate because memory was failing us.

Suppressing nightmares via cannabis or other methods may seem like a great way to make our subconsciousness shut the hell up, but by doing so we are really missing out on what the dream state has to offer!

Lately he has been having intense dreams often ending negatively.

The remedy is to drink one shot (and no more) of vodka (brandy, whiskey, etc.) mixed with one cup of some soda-pop with the 'before bedtime joint'.

I Think the reason you dont remember your dreams when you smoke is because you don't dream at all.

lol. oh god. No, you don't remember your dreams because you have CB1 and CB2 receptors lining your hippocampus (where shortterm memory is stored).

*Remembering* dreams due to smoking? New to me.

He said he feels its directly related to the pot so he is deciding to smoke less.

He drank heavily as a young adult so it can be difficult at times for him to have one drink (also you should see what he considers 1 drink). So I don't want to recommend that...

Pills cause me to dream vividly. Marijuana not so much. Perhaps he's popping pills.
Good guess, but he doesn't do any other drugs.

I wouldnt worry to much i, imo i dont think its the pot ..
Bad dreams can mean alot of things!
Maybe your friend has been having some external stresses latley which have been contributing to his nightmares..
Dont stress.

He doesn't talk much about personal stuff but I think he may be stressed. He's going to have to really cut back in order to hide it from his kid. He realizes this is a necessity because he's not the kind of guy who would smoke around his kids. Also, his wife will be pissed off at him because she's not cool with him smoking at all! But within a year or so he won't be able to put the baby asleep down the hall...

I have always dreamed less the more cannabis I consume, but I will advice this:

Tell him to pick up a physical activity. Any kind of sports, hiking, swimming, or even just a good ol fashion romping with the wifey should allow him to sleep better, without adding any drugs to the mix.
