I hope this is in the right forum...

Anyway, I was wondering what the best way to get your teeth white would be. Dentist (expensive) or is there any store bought products that work well? Thanks in advance.

Crest Whitestrips have worked for me. I have used premium and regular.

Warning: if you have any gum recession those badboys will painfully zing you into tearing them off your teeth in 60 seconds.

i use rembrandt whitening strips.. i only used about 1/2 the strips over hte course of 7 days though because they do sting my teeth pretty bad after the full 30 minutes.

I personally don't use any products... if you can afford a dentist, obviously they're the best way to go.

Also a cheaper option might be a dental hygienist, these folks specialize in cleaning teeth... all day, every day. They often do a better job then dentists and charge less.

The Crest Whitening Strips are probably the best on the market for whitening your teeth....It only takes 14 days and you definately see remarkable results (at least me anyways). I also use Listerine Whitening plus mouth wash BEFORE I brush my teeth...I can't even begin to tell you how many complaments I've recieved from the opposite sex about my grill...

I'll have to give the whitening strips a try again. Has anyone heard of a product that sort of lazers off a layer of your teeth to show a more white layer? A friend told me about it, and said it wasn't that expensive.

Chubba, I'm fine with my smile. my bottom teeth are perfectly straight (still have a wire behind them from when I had braces many years ago), and my top teeth aren't bad at all, not perfect, but nothing noticable. But see I smoke a pack a day, weed 2-4 times a day, and drink a lot of iced tea. None of it really helps my teeth. How does professional treatment work against these things that stain my teeth, and will my teeth quickly restain from smoking if I decide to spend the money on professional treatment?

^ Hrmm.. what about those whitening carbamide peroxide gels they sell over the internet? My dentist says "they are the same product, but beware internet purchases" blahblahblah. I guess the only real problem is the "fit" of the moldable gum holders?

lifeisforliving, I'll have to take a look at the gels, maybe I can find something suitable. As for worrying about the fit of the gum holders, I'm sure for someone with decently straight teeth it shouldn't be much of a problem, unless you have a very small/large mouth. They're probably created for the 'average' sized mouth, although I have no idea what that would be.

Not as much as someone that visits the dentist 4 times a year for a deep cleaning (30 minutes a quadrant, so 2 hours).

Not to mention the orthodontist has probably stolen $15,000 off me over the years for my perfectly straight smile.

Professional oral care >>>>>>> silly supermarket products.

Trust me on this one, once you start you'll never go back.

:D

Exactly. I use the whitening strips twice a year on top of all of my dental cleaning visits..We get report cards at our dentist and I always seem to have flawless teeth...I'm an ex-smoker too=D

I have yet to try any of the products, but I was advised by the dentist not to smoke or drink any coffe, soda etc. for several hours afterwards. Apparenty this stuff somewhat temporarily weakens the enamel and you can stain your teeth much easier when they are in this state.

I used those too and thought they worked well.

Wow, you mean more expensive professional care is better than 30$ over the counter products that are easy to use?!

But seriously I think people take teeth whitening to an unhealthy level. You say you visit the dentist for deep cleaning 4 times a year? Thats overkill imho. But you can do what you want.

when i was younger my mom used to tell me to brush my teeth with baking soda. i did that about every night for a few years. i always brush my teeth twice a day and i tend to not really rinse the toothpaste off my teeth too well so i kinda get the feeling that its working while im not brushing. i used to be an everyday smoker and people would always compliment me on how white my teeth were. and i felt like i wasnt really putting that much work into whitening them so thats what i would recommend. or just take mitch hedberg's advice, get a tan.

^ ah ok if you've had past dental problems then being agressive in your tooth care is legit. I've got all my teeth and like 2 cavities in my life, not much tarter or stains.. I brush/floss/use mouthwash multiple times a day and dont drink coffee or smoke or anything so I don't think I have to go to those extremes.

Be careful on your enamel though, you can wear it away with too much cleaning.

some people just have better genes when it comes to the whitness in there teeth...some white are whiter than other....

however if i was going to whiten my teeth i would use 'zoom' a light from a laser creates some sort off reaction on your enamel and makes it a few shades lighter in the space off 30minutes....supposely cost a bomb...@ 1k ...great results though.

However if you are going to smoke...why bother ?

secondly i think the strips and all the teeth whiteners on the market are just plain bad for your teeth..it leaves it in a state where brushing can do damage to the surface...

so best thing to whiten your teeth is too brush regularly floss eat rite, not smoke and have a zoom treatment and maintain it !

My friend got 2 boxes for free (crest contest), we both tried them. We both have teeth sensitive to cold... they do hurt a bit if your teeth are sensitive to cold.
Both of us felt like we had a toothache on a few teeth after wearing them for ~20 min.

They work great though! I used them 4-5 months ago and my teeth are still as white as the day I finished using them.

Do you smoke? Drink coffee/iced tea?

After having orthodontic treatment in the form of braces my teeth were quite discoloured.

I visited to my dentist who had some whitening molds up for me and I now use a product called Opalescence, check out http://www.smilox.com/ for info.

I use the 10% peroxide forumla and after using sparing amounts in the molds during a 5-10 day period (everyday) my teeth came out VERY white, enough for people to remark on them even after stopping treatment for 6-12 months.

There are various other options, this one I feel was the most cost effective as the gel refills are negligent in price. The initial consult to get the molds manufactured was AU$500 though, but they fit my teeth perfectly.

Your other options are the whitening strips which have varied success, in chair Zoom whitening treatment (immediate results but costs a lot of dough), take home kits like the one I've listed above or in the chair treatments that aren't Zoom.

Speak to your dentist about which is the best option, the things to keep in mind though no matter which product you use:

1. Some peoples teeth whiten easier than others, sometimes your teeth cannot be whitened no matter which treatment you use.

2. Whatever treatment you choose you will have to upkeep it every 3-6 months as your teeth will slowly discolour again, whitening is not permanent unless you get something horrible like porcelain veneers but who the hell wants fake teeth stuck on top of your real ones.

3. DO NOT over use the treatments. They damage the enamel on your teeth and can cause your gums to recede if you aren't careful with the application of the bleaching product (read: beware of chemical burns). It is imperative you back up any whitening treatment with regular dentist checkups so your teeth can be treated with fluoride and checked for any problems.

4. Surface stains can usually be removed with a scaling and clean from your dentist, the actual discolouration (ie. overall yellowing) of your teeth is what the whitening treatment normally helps.

5. Maintain excellent dental hygiene during any course of treatment and post treatment to ensure you keep your pearly whites healthy and clean for as long as possible.

6. Whitening treatment WILL make your teeth ultra sensitive (in fact painfully so) for the first few days of treatment and make them feel kind of numb thereafter, this stuff is not to be messed with. Do not become vainly encapsulated by your smile so much you end up treating your teeth too often or you'll just end up damaging them. You can treat the sensitivity with tooth moose.

7. No point spending $ on whitening your teeth if you: drink a lot of coffee or tea, smoke meth, cigarettes or marijuana, or drink a lot of artificially coloured drinks. Just don't bother, any treatment you have will just get ruined very quickly and you'll be constantly fighting and uphill battle. Better to spend the time cutting back your smoking and curbing that 12 coffee a day habit :)

Brush teeth, rinse with hydrogen peroxide(2 percent) and water, drink green or white tea. :) Favorite way to start my day.

Avoid refined sugar! Worse than cigarettes for your teeth(IMHO!)!
