Best Living Fiction Writer?

I don't know if I'd nominate these as the best, but definitely worth reading:

Neil Gaiman
Irvine Welsh
Timothy Findley
Salman Rushdie

One thing though- not that many women writers have been mentioned at all (not even by me). That's kind of sad. Though I will nominate Majgull Axelsson for being one of the best Swedish writers ever! :) Don't even know if any of her books have been translated though.

Yeah, I think that old bastard is still kicking around. He's like 85.

sadly, i don't read anywhere near enough as i should. so much so, in fact, that i've barely read any of the names mentioned here.

but the best living writer that *i've* ever read? margaret atwood by a fairly massive margin. palahniuk is good, but there's nothing like the resonance that atwood manages (even if i do love the political philosophy he espouses).

George R.R. Martin is amazing, he's my current obsession. Well, if he'd ever finish A Feast For Crows, it is supposed to be out July 26th. Im afraid im going to have to re-read the first 3 to remember everything (his books are pretty detailed).

If you like fantasy i highly recommend checking him out.

I checked out some of his books and reviews on Amazon, I will have to pick up some of his stuff. You might like Guy Gavriel Kay. After reading The Fionavar Tapestry Trilogy, I proceeded to read everything else he's written. While it's all pretty good, nothing comes close to the trilogy. I've been reading fantasy for a long time, and this trilogy is my all time favorite.

I'll have to look into the guy (no pun intended) you're talking about, can't say I've heard of him. Martin is amazing, though, by far the best fantasy author I have ever read--and I've read a lot.
